Environmental Advisor
Contract position

The Environmental Advisor shall support the Environmental Manager to develop, implement, and maintain the company’s Environmental Management System (EMS) within the wider project entity. This role provides expert environmental advice and support to Site Managers and Project Delivery teams within geographical regions. It acts as a key point of contact for site environmental issues, while also supporting and providing input to internal and external stakeholders.

The Environmental Advisor shall support the Environmental Manager to develop, implement, and maintain the company’s Environmental Management System (EMS) within the wider project entity. It acts as a key point of contact for site environmental issues, while also supporting and providing input to internal and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities, Duties, and Interdependencies
- Support and assist the Environmental Manager with the continuous improvement of the environmental and energy management system to deliver on Environmental Objectives and Targets. Monitor changes to UK and European environmental and energy legislation that directly impact the business, ensuring updates to processes and procedures.
- Support and advise Project Delivery teams and Site Management teams to ensure internal, external, and customer compliance with all requirements stipulated in the Environmental Management System (EMS), including relevant legislation.
- Ensure employees understand their statutory duties and responsibilities and are familiar with company environmental procedures and guidance notes.
- Attend project, site coordination, and progress review meetings, providing input and advice on environmental issues as appropriate. Ensure any environmental actions resulting from meetings are implemented effectively.
- Where required, apply for both permanent and temporary consents, ensuring compliance with consent conditions through the Project Environmental Management Plan.
- Coordinate with third-party Environmental Clerks of Works (ECoW) employed by the company, customers, and subcontractors as needed.
- Conduct environmental audits and inspections to ensure compliance with legislation, prevent pollution, and encourage resource efficiency.
- Identify significant environmental impacts and assist in the establishment of appropriate controls.
- Ensure all environmental near misses and incidents are reported in accordance with company and client procedures. Support site teams in investigating incidents to ensure effective corrective and preventative measures.
- Assist clients with environmental site monitoring and audits, ensuring findings are reported to the project and site management teams as well as the Environmental Manager.
- Support the creation and development of Construction Environmental Management Plans (CEMP) and Resource and Site Waste Management Plans (RSWMP), ensuring compliance throughout the project lifecycle.
- Provide input into pre-qualification, tender submissions, and environmental award applications.
- Assist the Environmental Manager in implementing environmental campaigns and continuous improvement initiatives, raising awareness and engaging employees.
- Compile monthly site environmental data for reporting purposes and provide guidance to site management teams on data collection processes.
- Support the preparation and delivery of environmental training via online platforms, toolbox talks, and project stand-down sessions.
- Participate in rotational experience within the wider QEHS function to gain insight into other business areas.
- Provide coverage for other Environmental Advisors as needed.
Essential:
- Degree in a relevant discipline.
- Computer literacy (MS Office, including Excel and PowerPoint).
- Valid driver’s license.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage with stakeholders at all levels.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Graduate IEMA Membership or above (or willingness to obtain).
- Experience in the construction industry.
- Experience working with environmental management systems.
- Experience in delivering training or awareness sessions.
- Internal audit training.
- Investigation training.
- Health & Safety qualifications.
- Human Factors training.
- Highly motivated and confident self-starter.
- Strong forward planning, strategic thinking, and prioritization skills.
