The Assistant Director for HVAC Systems provides leadership, strategic oversight, and technical expertise in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the university's heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. This position ensures the delivery of high-quality, energy-efficient climate control services across all campus facilities. The Assistant Director manages HVAC personnel, oversees preventative maintenance programs, and collaborates with engineering and sustainability teams to support long-term operational goals.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise daily HVAC operations, including the scheduling, assignment, and inspection of work completed by technicians and contractors.
  • Ensure all HVAC systems (chillers, boilers, air handlers, cooling towers, control systems, etc.) are operating efficiently and in compliance with university standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead diagnostics and troubleshooting of complex HVAC issues and recommend solutions or upgrades as needed.
  • Directly manage HVAC technicians and support staff, including hiring, training, performance evaluations, and professional development.
  • Monitor maintenance logs, service reports, and asset records to ensure timely repairs and replacements.
  • Assist in planning and execution of HVAC system upgrades, retrofits, and energy efficiency projects.
  • Work with contractors, engineers, and architects on renovation and new construction projects involving HVAC systems.
  • Assist in the preparation and management of the HVAC operations budget.
  • Ensure HVAC operations meet all local, state, and federal codes, including OSHA, EPA, and ASHRAE standards.

Education
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC Technology, Facilities Management, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in HVAC systems, including 3 years in a supervisory or management role.
  • Must be available for emergency response outside of regular work hours, including weekends and holidays to varying weather conditions, confined spaces, and mechanical hazards.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds.
