 Geo Hazard Design Engineer (Pipeline Project - Oil and Gas) - Remote

Geo Hazard Design Engineer

  1. Responsibilities
  • Design & Engineering
  • Develop detailed design calculations and specifications for geohazard mitigation structures, including but not limited to:
  • Slope Stabilization: Retaining walls (cantilever, gabion, crib), soil nailing, rockfall netting, and ground anchorage systems.
  • Surface Erosion Control: Design of check dams, terracing, channel linings, and bio-engineering solutions using local vegetation.
  • Deep-Seated Landslide Mitigation: Design of subsurface drainage systems (horizontal drains) and large-scale stabilization works.
  • Foundation Design: Design of pipe supports, pads, and foundations in areas of soft ground or potential settlement.
  • Select appropriate construction materials and specify their properties for mitigation works.
  • Prepare detailed design drawings, technical specifications, and Bills of Quantities (BOQ) for tender and construction packages.
  • Ensure all designs comply with Project Specifications, international standards (e.g., AS 4678, ISO 21857), and best practices for pipeline geotechnical design.
  • Integration & Collaboration
  • Work closely with the Geohazard Assessment team to understand the hazard mechanisms and design constraints.
  • Liaise with the Pipeline Construction Engineer to ensure designs are practical and constructible within the project's logistical constraints (e.g., equipment and material availability).
  • Coordinate with the Environmental team to ensure mitigation designs are environmentally sustainable and comply with all environmental management plans.
  • Provide technical input to the routing team to evaluate the cost and feasibility of mitigation vs. pipeline re-routing.
  • Construction Support
  • Provide technical support during the construction phase, responding to Requests for Information (RFIs) and reviewing contractor-submitted design shop drawings.
  • Visit the site during critical phases of mitigation construction to provide oversight and ensure adherence to design intent.
  1. Qualifications and Experience
  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering (with a geotechnical focus), or a related field.
  • Professional Chartership or Registration is highly desirable.
  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in geotechnical design, with at least 5 years specifically focused on the design of geohazard mitigation measures for linear infrastructure (pipelines, roads, railways).
  • Proven experience in the design of slope stabilization, retaining structures, and erosion control systems.
  • Proficiency with geotechnical design software (e.g., Plaxis 2D/3D, Slide, GeoStudio, LPILE, Wallap).
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD or similar for reviewing and marking up design drawings.
  • Fluent English communication skills, both written and verbal, with a proven ability to write clear and concise technical design reports.
  • Highly Desirable / Preferred for PNG Context:
  • Experience working on major projects in the Asia-Pacific region, with specific experience in PNG or similar tropical, mountainous, and seismically active terrains.
  • Demonstrated experience designing mitigation measures for rainfall-induced landslides and erosion in high-rainfall environments.
  • Understanding of the logistical challenges of remote projects and experience in developing practical designs that use locally available materials or materials that are feasible to transport to a remote site.
  • Willingness and ability to undertake periodic site visits in remote and challenging conditions to validate design assumptions and support construction.
  1. Personal Attributes
  • Strong problem-solving skills and innovative thinking to develop cost-effective solutions for complex geotechnical challenges.
  • Meticulous attention to detail in calculations, specifications, and drawings.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary, multicultural team environment.
  • Resilience and adaptability to work in a demanding, remote project setting.
