Wood is seeking a Principal Environmental Consultant to join our Project Development & Engineering team within our Clean Energy Consulting business.

This role is well-suited for a practical, technically strong environmental professional who enjoys varied work and wants to contribute to an expanding clean energy consulting team. The position is centered on environmental project delivery, biological/natural resources support, and permitting for renewable energy and infrastructure projects.

The selected candidate will support wind, solar, battery energy storage, transmission, and related development projects across the U.S. Day-to-day work may include managing tasks, preparing and reviewing technical reports, supporting biological and environmental permitting, coordinating with internal teams and subcontractors, mentoring junior staff, supporting proposal and scope development, and translating environmental constraints into practical recommendations for clients.

This is not intended to be a primarily field-based role. Occasional travel and site visits are may be requested to support specific projects, generally intermittent and up to approximately 30%, depending on project needs and candidate interest or availability. The position is primarily focused on project delivery, technical consulting, and regulatory support.

This role is anticipated as a contractor position. Wood may also consider part-time or contract-based arrangements for highly qualified candidates whose experience aligns well with the team's needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Responsibilities:

The Principal Environmental Consultant will support environmental consulting and permitting work for clean energy and infrastructure projects. The role will be shaped in part around the selected candidate's strengths, but responsibilities may include:
  • Advise on environmental tasks, schedules, budgets, staffing needs, subcontractors, and deliverables under the direction of senior project managers or program leads.
  • Prepare, review, and support technical reports, biological assessments, habitat assessments, environmental constraints reviews, permit applications, agency submittals, and related environmental documentation.
  • Support environmental permitting strategy and documentation related to federal, state, and local requirements, including the Endangered Species Act, Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, Clean Water Act, NEPA, state-listed species requirements, and other applicable environmental regulations.
  • Support biological and natural resources assessments, which may include avian, eagle, bat, listed species, habitat, wetland/waters, and other project-specific evaluations.
  • Support site visits or occasionally when needed, such as in-person client meetings, biological surveys, habitat assessments, site reconnaissance, wetland/waters field support, construction/compliance monitoring, or other project-specific field tasks.
  • Coordinate with clients, regulatory agencies, subcontractors, landowners, and internal technical teams to support practical and defensible project outcomes.
  • Support proposal development, scopes of work, cost estimates, and project planning for new and existing clients.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior staff through field planning, report review, QA/QC, and practical project delivery support.
  • Maintain strong health, safety, and environmental performance during fieldwork and project delivery.

Expected:
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, wildlife biology, ecology, environmental science, natural resources, environmental planning, or a related field.
  • Typically 15+ years of relevant experience in environmental consulting, renewable energy, natural resources, permitting, regulatory compliance, or a related project-based field. Candidates with a different mix of directly relevant experience may also be considered.
  • Experience preparing, reviewing, or managing environmental technical documents, such as biological assessments, habitat assessments, constraints reviews, permit applications, environmental reports, or compliance documentation.
  • Working knowledge of federal and/or state environmental permitting processes, such as the Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, NEPA, state-listed species requirements, or similar regulatory programs.
  • Ability to oversee tasks, schedules, budgets, subcontractors, and deliverables in a consulting or project-based environment.
  • Comfort supporting occasional fieldwork, site visits, and project-related travel.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical issues clearly to project teams and clients.
  • Strong organization, time management, problem-solving, and judgment.
  • Valid driver's license for use within the U.S.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or authorized to work lawfully in the U.S. without sponsorship from Wood.
Additional Desired Skills And Qualifications
  • Experience with renewable energy projects, including wind, solar, battery energy storage, transmission, or other infrastructure development.
  • Experience supporting or preparing Bird and Bat Conservation Strategies, Eagle Conservation Plans, Habitat Conservation Plans, wildlife management plans, or similar documents.
  • Experience with avian, eagle, bat, listed species, habitat, wetland/waters, or construction/compliance monitoring work.
  • Familiarity with bat survey methods, acoustic monitoring, roost assessments, transportation structure surveys, or listed bat compliance considerations.
  • Possession of, or eligibility for, scientific collecting permits or other species-specific survey authorizations.
  • Familiarity with GIS or spatial data for field planning, constraints reviews, impact calculations, or environmental exhibits.
  • Familiarity with NEPA permitting, wetland delineations, Section 404 permitting, Phase I ESAs, stormwater, or other environmental consulting services.
  • Experience coordinating with regulatory agencies, clients, subcontractors, landowners, or local stakeholders.
  • Experience supporting proposals, scopes of work, cost estimates, or client development.
  • Professional certification such as PMP, CWB, PWS, or similar credentials.
Compensation:
