The Onshore Tower Structure department at Vestas is integral to the design, certification, and lifecycle management of onshore wind turbine towers. Operating within Vestas' Technology & Operations division, the department focuses on delivering innovative and reliable tower solutions that support both steel and hybrid (steel-concrete) technologies. Our multidisciplinary team collaborates globally to ensure that tower structures meet the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and compliance.

Department responsibilities include:
  • Overseeing structural engineering activities for tower platforms, ensuring continued certification validity and long-term compliance
  • Designing and modifying steel and hybrid (steel-concrete) wind turbine towers with a focus on sustainability, structural efficiency, and cost optimization
  • Collaborating cross-functionally with certification, sales, compliance, and cost-reduction teams to align structural solutions with business and regulatory objectives
  • Coordinating the timely execution of lifecycle engineering tasks in alignment with internal quality processes and external certification timelines
  • Acting as subject matter experts in relevant standards, including Eurocode, DiBT, and IEC, applying them effectively in daily engineering tasks and documentation reviews


Responsibilities
  • Manage the integration of specialized certification knowledge into Tower design and manufacturing processes
  • Serve as Vestas' key representative on international certification committees, contributing to the development of wind tower industry standards
  • Manage direct collaboration with certification bodies (DNV, TÜV), overseeing the implementation of new and revised certification criteria
  • Develop and rigorously enforce technical requirements and quality controls on critical tower components, focusing on the prevention of failure modes and ensuring design robustness
  • Systematically identify and mitigate regulatory risks by tracking global compliance developments and industry trends
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to certification and design teams, ensuring accountability and technical excellence


Qualifications
  • Minimum 10 years of practical experience specifically in certification and quality assurance of steel structural components within the wind energy sector or closely related heavy industry
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Structural or Mechanical Engineering; advanced certifications in quality or compliance are highly advantageous
  • Demonstrable experience working with certification bodies and standards such as DNV, TÜV, ISO, and DiBT, with an extensive record of interfacing and negotiating with these organizations
  • In-depth knowledge of bolt, flange, and shell plate design, including detailed understanding of their failure mechanisms, quality challenges, and certification verification methods
  • Demonstrated experience leading or significantly contributing to technical committees or industry standard-setting bodies is essential
  • Familiarity with relevant international standards for wind turbine towers and quality management systems is expected

Additional information

This is a hybrid position based in Porto, Portugal or Aarhus, Denmark, and requires up to 30 travel days per year (short trips within Europe only).
