Key Commissioning Technician (Solar Energy)

Compensation: $80,000 - $125,000 / year

Description

The Key Commissioning Technician should support, define and organize the start-up, testing and commissioning activities for multiple solar PV projects. This individual will work to ensure all job tasks related to plant start-up and commissioning are planned for and completed within pre-established schedules. This individual will be required to secure and maintain strong working relationships with our client's corporate support functions, along with various contractors and key equipment vendors.
The Key Commissioning Technician will have a strong knowledge of utility interconnection and commissioning requirements, as well as foster a strong working relationship with utility counterparts.
Additionally, the commissioning process should be standardized as much as possible through formalized procedures and documentation.

Key Responsibilities

1. A belief that all projects can be completed with ZERO injuries and the safety of our employees, subs and owners is top priority.
2. Define the plant start-up, testing and commissioning standard procedures, according to our EPC agreement including but not limited to local standards, OEM requirements, Design requirements, utility requirements and in collaboration with our safety manager.
3. Ensures that plant start-up, testing and commissioning procedures are executed in a standardized method and observations/results are formally documented in a consistent format.
4. Develop incremental commissioning strategies to support schedule needs if necessary.
5. Start-up and commission responsibilities will at a minimum apply to the following facilities/equipment within a solar PV plant:
a. Inverters
b. Solar trackers
c. SCADA including all metering and TELCO systems
d. MV equipment including cabling and connections
e. Combiner
f. Reclosure, breaker and other protection equipment
g. Load Banking as needed
h. O&M Building
i. Collection system
j. Step-substation
k. Transmission Line
6. Creates standard tools to be used to gather, track and assess information collected during plant start-up and commissioning activities.
7. Support QAQC program by providing verified test reports and documentation in a timely manner
8. Publishes original materials and continually enhances documentation surrounding the processes, procedures, responsibility matrix and tools to be used during a project's start-up, testing and commissioning phases.
9. Comprehends and ensures compliance with applicable environmental, interconnection, transmission operator and client rules, regulations and standards. Capable of understanding and complying with the contractual terms outlined in various agreements and contracts.
10. Tracks multiple work task schedules, provides schedule progression updates and proactively identifies schedule constraints.
11. Coordinates efforts of various stakeholders needed to work collaboratively on plant start-up and commission activities (internal resources, key equipment vendors, PV Plant contractor(s) and Substation EPC contractor).
12. Drafts and prepares various forms of written communications to project management, subcontractors and client technical support personnel.
13. Coordinates meetings and presents reports to various Project Delivery and subcontractor team members regarding status and progress of project start-up and commission activities.
14. Maintain a culture of continuous improvement and problem solving.
15. Conduct other duties as required.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Required Education and Experience:
  • Possess strong electrical and communications skills/experience.
  • Skilled in the use of testing equipment and tools such as Thermography.
  • Diagnostic capabilities to troubleshoot and correct problems found.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical single-line and three-line diagrams.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite.
  • Proficiency with Procore or similar construction management software.
  • Valid Driver's License and clean driving record.
  • OSHA 10 Certified.
  • Ability to take direction and complete tasks with minimal oversight.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:
  • Journeyman Electrical Licensure
  • Strong understanding of NEC Code
  • 3+ years of experience with operations of SCADA, DAS and UPS system
  • Electrical Inspection, IV Curving Tracing, Meggers, Ground Fault Detection
  • Experience in all aspects of PV maintenance, including DC systems, AC medium voltage systems, and network communications and monitoring
  • Experience working on solar construction
  • OSHA 30 Certified
