Overview

The Gas Technician III in Pressure and Measurement is responsible for construction, maintenance and operations of the City's gas distribution system. As Foreman, supervises a crew that constructs and installs gas mains which involve pipe fitting, welding, making taps, installing services, making repairs, fusion of Poly pipe, constructing off-sets and any other related work as requires such as responding to emergencies.

Responsibilities
• Uses small hand tools, tapping, and stopple equipment. Performs semi-skilled and common labor work such as paint and/ or wrap pipe, cutting and threading pipe, pipe-fitting and assists in other pipeline maintenance as required frequently lifting up to 100 pounds with assistance
• Operates backhoe, trenching machine, and other semi-heavy maintenance and construction equipment
• Inspects equipment and makes adjustments and minor repairs to maintain equipment in proper operating condition

• Performs clerical tasks such as completing required forms used to document inspections from work orders in accordance with Department procedures and/ or regulatory requirements
• Reviews all paperwork prepared by subordinates
• Operates a 1 Ton truck, 2 ½ Ton crew truck, winch truck, dump truck, pickup truck, Pole and Float trailers, ditchers, air compressors, welding machine and equipment
• Preforms the planning and supervision of work crew
• Reviews and monitors work progress of crew ensuring work is being conducted in accordance with company procedures
• Monitors DOT inspections on all gas regulators stations, regulators, relief valves, key valves and gas main pressure tests\
• Ensures DOT regulations are being followed and logs and records are maintained up to date
• Monitors gas pressures appropriate DOT records and reports findings and results to Gas Pressure Inspector
• Serves as primary welder involved in the construction and maintenance of gas distribution facilities by performing pipe fitting and welding; Performs electric arc and oxy-acetylene welding to cut and fit pipe ranging from ½ to 12in in diameter
• Welds stopple fittings on gas mains and operates stopple equipment to make hot taps and/ or valve off sections of pipe
• May be asked to perform other duties as assigned

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work
• Non exempt - Full-Time
• Non rotating 40-hour work week, Monday - Friday, 6:00 am - 3:00 pm; must be available to work additional hours as needed
• In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services.

Minimum Qualifications
• High School/ GED
• Five (5) years of experience

Licenses and Certifications

Required
• Class A Commercial Driver's License with Air Brake Endorsement
• Candidate must register with FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse
• A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire

Required within six (6) months of hire
• Certified as a competent welder by the Gas Department in both Oxy-acetylene and electric arc welding
• Certified to fuse Poly pipe

Basis of Rating

A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview.
