Honeywell UOP is seeking a hands-on and detail-oriented R&D Engineer Scientist II to join our Data Transformation and Testing Group in Des Plaines, IL. This role is focused on the operation, troubleshooting, and optimization of catalyst testing units, including fixed-bed and combinatorial reactors. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in chemistry, mechanical aptitude for modifying and maintaining lab systems, and the ability to contribute to data analysis and visualization. You'll collaborate closely with senior staff and project teams to drive innovation in catalyst development, while ensuring adherence to safety protocols and technical excellence.

The annual base salary range for this position is $86,400 - $108,200. Please note that this salary information serves as a general guideline. Honeywell considers various factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education and training, key skills, as well as market and business considerations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Operate 2-4 heterogenous catalyst testing and treatment units including:
o Fixed-bed continuous flow laboratory plants,
o Combinatorial fixed bed catalyst testing and treatment plants, and/or
• Setting up and modifying systems to carry out catalyst testing.
• Utilize existing plant process control systems (primarily Honeywell or LabVIEW based).
• Troubleshoot plant operation problems and work with senior staff and project teams to find and address root causes.
• Perform basic laboratory operations for preparing catalysts such as solution preparation, wet chemical catalyst treatments, grinding, and particle sizing.
• Work with senior staff and project teams to improve data collection, handling, processing, and visualization tools.
• Provide summaries of results - both verbally and in written form - and discuss these with senior staff and project teams.
• Ability to occasionally lift 20 lbs
• Observe and maintain monthly Safety Management System requirements.

YOU MUST HAVE:
• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a technical discipline such as the sciences, technology, engineering or mathematics
• 2+ years of experience applying chemistry principles in a laboratory or R&D setting, specifically in catalyst preparation or testing.
• 2+ years of hands-on experience using Microsoft Office tools for data analysis, documentation, and technical presentations.
• 2+ years of hands-on experience demonstrating strong mechanical aptitude by assembling, modifying, and troubleshooting laboratory-scale test equipment in engineering and scientific research environments.

• Experience with software tools such as JMP, MATLAB, Origin

• Familiarity with laboratory safety protocols.
• Effective communication and teamwork skills.
• Knowledge of UOP materials and processes and associated analytical methods.
