The Advanced Product Development Section is inventing the future of flight and advancing propulsion capability for the next generation of military applications. APD's focus is the design, integration, testing, and support of a future production application. Technology areas include military inlet & exhaust systems, integrated propulsion power & thermal management systems, advanced material systems, and other breakthrough component and system technologies to support the future of military flight.

The APD - Mechanical Design Staff Engineer will plan and lead hardware owners for an Edison Works New Product Introduction (NPI) program as a technical focal and Sub-Team leader. This is a role for someone with a passion for engineering who has experience with the design process and can develop a strategy for success when confronted with a technical challenge. A Staff Engineer does not work alone and must be able to focus, guide, and develop teams by setting goals, championing initiatives, and providing mentorship for the broader team.

As a Sub-Team leader for hardware owners in the Mechanical Design Subsection, you will coordinate the maturation of high temperature engine components and integrate across the larger Integrated Product Team. As a team lead you will not only utilize core engineer skills including 3D modeling, finite element analysis, high cycle & low cycle fatigue assessments, mechanical stack-ups and drawing definition release but also provide direction and mentorship to less experienced engineers.

In addition, the Staff engineer will manage priority across multiple cross-functional teams to establish boundary conditions, assess material and manufacturing capabilities, conduct design trades to optimize across a range of requirements, and be responsible for managing the impact on project cost and schedule. Designs will be developed in support of future test and qualification efforts and the scope of the role will also include development of producibility and supportability strategies. This position reports to an engineering manager in Evendale, OH with the opportunity to integrate with various internal & external engineering disciplines.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

• Develop and implement plans to ensure that contract requirements are fulfilled.
• Lead efforts to solve both technical and schedule related problems.
• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to other personnel.
• Work with a closely integrated team of engineers and scientists to design the next generation of jet engine turbomachinery.
• Work closely with internal and external manufacturing organizations to deliver hardware for rig and full engine testing.
• Present work to subject matter experts and program leaders at technical reviews.
• Participate in technical reviews as a reviewer.
• Ensure work is thoroughly documented.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Aeronautical Engineering.
• At least 5 additional years of experience in an aerospace or mechanical engineering position.
• Due to the nature of the duties of this position, this role requires the individual to obtain and maintain US Government Security Clearance; prerequisite for a security clearance is U.S. citizenship

• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with all levels of the organization.
• Demonstrated passion for engineering and exceptional communication skills.
• 10 years or more of experience in a mechanical design engineering position.
• Demonstrated ability to analyze & solve technical design challenges with sound documentation, planning, & program management skills.
• Experience with finite element analysis software such as ANSYS and 3D modelling software such as NX Unigraphics.
• Material Review Board (MRB) certification.
• Strong track record of ability to work in a team environment.
• Outstanding mentoring skills and a strong desire to help others succeed
• Experience with structural component design.
• Current/existing US Government Security Clearance
• Experience with engine/aircraft maintainability and reliability
• Experience with design quality assurance
• Experience working with DoD customer and processes
• Experience working on DoD EVM projects
