Mechanical Engineering Design/ Analyst

Our Nuclear Canada business is experiencing significant growth driven in part by planned New Build projects underway internationally and domestically. Candu Energy Inc., an AtkinsRéalis company is involved in the deployment of the GEH BWRX-300 Small Modular Reactor (SMR) at Ontario Power Genration Darlington site. It will be the first grid-scale SMR deployed in Canada.

We are currently seeking Mechanical Design Analysts/Engineers - Site Support to join our team at the project site office, in Oshawa, Ontario.

Your role within the team:
  • Perform engineering work following AtkinsRéalis/Candu Energy QA programs, and applicable codes, standards, and regulation requirements.
  • Provide prompt response and engineering resolutions on any critical engineering related matters.
  • Complete the assigned scopes or tasks within given budget and schedule, and in good quality.
  • Represent Mechanical Design Engineering in the field during fabrication and construction.
  • Provide mechanical design support to the construction team in the field for the execution of system design packages.
  • Provide mechanical design support for the pre-fabrication activities.
  • Provide solutions and recommendations to technical issues in the field.
  • Ensure that the design is executed as per Design Packages released for construction and fabrication.
  • Process field-initiated changes (FIC), deviations, non-conformances, and requests for information (RFI) in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Identify the type of field-initiated change (Intent or non- Intent) and seek direction from the home office design team as required.
  • Act as interface between the construction team and the home office Mechanical design team and support/prepare processes for configuration control.
  • Report progress to Mechanical Engineering Team on a regular basis.
  • Work with other inter-discipline Site Support Design Engineers to ensure Engineering support is available to construction as required.
  • Ensure all changes are communicated to the design home office and proper approvals are acquired.
  • Interface with plant personnel to ensure that plant operability and nuclear safety concerns are adequately clarified.

The ideal candidate:
  • Engineering Degree in Mechanical from an accredited university or equivalent degree as recognized by Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO). (experience with green field construction and/or nuclear industry are assets).
  • 2 to 5 years of related work experience in mechanical engineering within a heavy industrial environment such as: mining, oil & gas, power, nuclear etc.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical and piping systems or equipment (knowledge of CANDU nuclear systems would be an asset).
  • Working knowledge of CSA N285.0 and CSA B51, CSA N289 and ASME Section III and ANSI B31.1 codes and any other applicable standards or regulatory guides related to permanent plant components, pressure boundary equipment, and/or reactor systems is preferred.
  • Design engineering experience in nuclear class 1, 2, 3 and 6 piping systems, valves, pumps and for Nuclear Power Plants is preferable.
  • Experience in Stress Analysis using PipeStress, CeasarII, Auto Pipe, MATLAB, MathCAD, ANSYS-APDL, and LSDYNA or other similar software program is an asset.
  • Must be able to apply technical principles in a logical and practical manner to resolve engineering issues or technical problems.
  • Shall have excellent communication and technical writing skills.
  • Demonstrate good interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Site experience in construction, or commissioning of plant mechanical systems for nuclear or other heavy industries would be an asset.
  • Must be willing to become a Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW), although this will not be a regular requirement as part of the job.
  • Eligible to obtain Security Clearances, Ontario Power Generation and AtkinsRéalis through Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC), are mandatory.
