Job Description Summary

The CMM Technician in Aerospace is responsible for performing inspections of aerospace components using Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM). This role involves setting up and operating CMMs to ensure the dimensional accuracy and compliance of parts with engineering specifications and aerospace industry standards. The technician inspects a variety of components, documenting measurements, and identifying any discrepancies or deviations from the required tolerances. This position plays a critical role in maintaining high-quality standards in the manufacturing process and ensuring that all aerospace components meet strict regulatory and customer requirements.

Job Description

Responsibilities
  • Use precision measurement instruments such as CMMs (Coordinate Measuring Machines), calipers, micrometers, and optical comparators to perform dimensional checks and ensure conformance to specifications.
  • Verify that parts are in compliance with technical drawings, CAD data, and applicable industry standards.
  • Set up and operate CMM machines to inspect aerospace components with complex features for dimensional accuracy to ensure parts meet required specifications per the approved inspection plan.
  • Perform inspection in accordance and in compliance to the approved policies, procedures, work instructions, plannings, inspection plans, etc. as applicable per the site Quality Management System.
  • Perform visual inspection for incoming and outgoing parts from the operation to verify part integrity.
  • Record and document inspection results, including detailed reports of measurements, discrepancies, and findings safeguarding data integrity.
  • Regularly check and verify CMM machines to ensure precise measurements and peak performance.
  • Work closely with engineers and other quality control personnel to address any quality concerns, non-conformities or unusual findings during the inspection process.
  • Communicate any inadvertent process deviations promptly and assist with corrective actions to resolve quality issues.
  • Suggest and implement improvements to inspection processes, including recommending new tools, practices, or technologies to improve measurement accuracy or efficiency.
  • Stay current on CMM technologies and industry standards to maintain the highest level of inspection quality.
  • Support execution of CMM program validation and correlation studies,
  • Ensure parts meet all engineering specifications, material requirements, tolerances, and performance standards.
  • Perform visual inspections to verify surface finishes, coatings, and other non-mechanical features of components.
  • Record detailed inspection results in compliance with quality assurance procedures.
  • Generate and submit inspection reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Log deviations, non-conformances, and corrective actions taken, ensuring proper documentation for audits.
  • Adhere to aerospace quality standards, including AS9102 (First Article Inspection), AS9100 (Quality Management Systems for aerospace), AS13100 (Aero Engines Quality Management Systems).
  • Input inspection results into the company's internal quality control systems.
  • Ensure traceability of all parts, from inspection through production, by maintaining accurate records and supporting data integrity.


Required Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in engineering, quality, or related fields.
  • 2 years of experience in CMM inspection within a manufacturing environment, preferably in the aerospace industry.
  • Proficient in using precision measurement tools (CMM, micrometers, calipers, etc.) and interpreting engineering drawings and blueprints.
  • Proficiency in operating CMM machines for inspection purposes, including knowledge of various measurement tools and techniques.
  • Strong understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
  • Excellent attention to detail, ensuring accurate and precise inspection results.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to identify issues during inspections and assist in resolution.
  • Knowledge of aerospace industry standards such as AS9100, AS9102, AS13100.
