Job Description Summary

The Staff Engineer - Embedded Software Development plays a critical role in the aerospace sector, driving the design, development, and testing of embedded software, platforms, and systems. This position requires a deep understanding of hardware characteristics, real-time functionality, and the ability to architect, implement, and validate software solutions to meet complex system requirements. The role also involves collaborating across disciplines to shape and execute strategies that support next-generation product roadmaps and innovation.

Location: Grand Rapids, MI

This position, which offers a blend of onsite and hybrid work arrangements, is based in Grand Rapids and necessitates a presence in the office for 2-3 days each week. An extensive corporate relocation package is also available for eligible candidates.

Job Description

Technical Leadership:

  • Mentor and Develop Talent: Provide guidance and mentorship to team members, fostering growth and technical excellence.
  • Shape the Future: Support next-generation product roadmaps and strategic planning in collaboration with the Advanced Technologies Organization.
  • Drive Collaboration: Coordinate with customers and internal stakeholders across Systems, Hardware, Safety, Security, Quality, Certification, and Sourcing.
  • Lead Sub-Contracting Efforts: Develop statements of work, manage RFQs, and support proposals for customers and engineering suppliers.
  • Deliver Excellence: Guide project teams through the full software lifecycle, including requirements, design, implementation, verification, validation, and certification.
  • Be the Expert: Maintain deep product knowledge and application expertise.
  • Innovate and Build: Architect and develop embedded software solutions, including networks, operating systems, cybersecurity, databases, and applications.
  • Champion Technology: Collaborate with Platform Software Engineering Managers to implement reuse strategies and drive process improvements.
  • Communicate Effectively: Document technical details and ensure seamless communication with software teams, support groups, and management.


Technical Skills:
  • Embedded Software Expertise: Skilled in development tools and environments, including debuggers, emulators, and compilers.
  • Hardware-Software Integration: Experienced with microcontrollers, microprocessors, FPGA-based systems, and PCIe.
  • Protocol Proficiency: Familiar with Ethernet, CAN, ARINC 429, and MIL-STD-1553 communication protocols.
  • Lifecycle Mastery: Deep understanding of software development methodologies like Waterfall, Agile, and V-Model.
  • Programming Skills: Proficient in C and scripting languages such as Python, Perl, and shell scripting.
  • Problem Solver: Proven ability to analyze and resolve complex issues, meet cost/schedule targets, and support debugging and board bring-up activities.
  • Leadership & Collaboration: Acts as a mentor, leads small projects, builds consensus, and develops persuasion skills to influence outcomes within Platform Software.


Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college, or a high school diploma/GED with at least 15-20 years of experience in Engineering and Technology.
  • 8-10 years of experience in programming embedded software.
  • US Citizen: This role requires use of technical data subject to U.S. Government contract restrictions and this posting is only for U.S. Citizens. GE will require proof of status prior to employment.


Desired Characteristics:
  • DO-178B/C Expertise: Extensive experience in development roles for DO-178B/C projects.
  • Communication Skills: Strong oral and written communication abilities.
  • Lifecycle Mastery: Comprehensive experience in full software development lifecycle.
  • Project Leadership: Proven project management capabilities.
  • Multicore Proficiency: Skilled in developing products for multicore processor environments.
  • RTOS & Hypervisors: Knowledge of real-time operating systems, hypervisor technologies, and Xilinx Standalone environments.
  • Network Drivers: Experience with network driver development for commercial embedded RTOS.
  • Global Collaboration: Experienced in working with global teams, including GE and Preferred Suppliers.


The base pay range for this position is $121,500.00 - $162,100.00 . The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on a percentage of your base salary/ commission based on the plan. This posting is expected to close on 10/31/25 .
