Join WDFW and help ensure hatchery operations run smoothly and efficiently across Washington.
In this position, you'll work to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair generators and their support systems-ensuring they're ready when needed most.
You'll develop preventative maintenance schedules, track and report on completed work, and coordinate with local specialists to meet operational requirements.
Along the way, you'll provide expert input on generator placement, system design, and fuel and exhaust systems, while also collaborating with other trades to complete critical projects.
This is a hands-on role where your technical expertise directly supports the success of WDFW's broader mission.
What to Expect-

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Generator Technician will,
Generator and Compressor Maintenance (Diesel Mechanics):
  • Respond to emergencies where fish loss is imminent.
  • Develop a routine inspection schedule for the generator preventative maintenance program.
  • Perform periodic and emergent diagnostic testing of generators up to 450,000W.
  • Conduct risk assessments and recommend replacements or major repairs.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance and unscheduled repairs of airburst compressors and associated equipment.
  • Support upgrades, removals and installations of agency emergency generators and airburst compressors.

Project Leadership and Administration:
  • Maintain database and inventory of hatchery generator equipment (e.g., filters, block heaters, oil, coolant) and maintain diesel engine monitoring equipment.
  • Develop cost estimates for repairs or replacements of parts.
  • Track monthly expenditures, including travel, vehicle mileage, purchases, and hours, and prepare Excel-based reports for submission.
  • Monitor work orders related to generator and compressor needs to develop and implement work schedules.
  • Prioritize and schedule projects based on severity of issues, program priorities, and/or geographical locations.

Generator Electrical Preventative Maintenance:

  • Independently conduct on-site load bank testing generators to verify that all primary components of the generator set are in proper working condition.

Metal Fabrication:

  • Design and fabricate exhaust discharges to accommodate the unique placement of these machines.

Plumbing:

  • Inspect and maintain propane and diesel fuel delivery systems and containment to assess efficiency and wear.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work Setting, including hazards:
  • Duties are performed at construction sites in the Hatcheries and Wildlife areas and on occasion in an office setting.
  • Hazards include working on rough terrain, riverbanks, slippery slopes, and other surfaces, confined and difficult to reach spaces, and in all types of weather conditions, including extreme heat, rain, or snow.
  • Bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, and lifting of 50 pounds repetitively when loading and unloading trucks or moving materials around project site.
  • Operate motor vehicles in hazardous weather conditions such as snow and ice while on mountain passes, highways, and roads (both paved and unpaved).
  • This position may involve working in or near water, including tasks that require navigating, negotiating, and performing duties related to water environments.
  • Some tasks may involve sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Schedule:

Typically, 6:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday - Thursday. Must respond to emergency calls of power related failures that may occur during non-working hours. Work overtime as needed/requested. This may include overnight stays, evenings and weekend work.
Travel Requirements:

Travel may be required 60-80% of the time depending on season.
Tools and Equipment:

Basic hand tools, power tools such as drills, roto hammers, cut off saws, circular saws, hydraulic punch, metal band saws, welders, cutting torch, plasma cutter, chainsaws, and/or powered motors, automotive equipment and trailers.
Customer Interactions:

Frequent interactions varying between Federal, Local, Inter-Agency, and Intra-Agency customers and vendors.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Qualifications:
Option 1: Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a skilled mechanic trade.
AND
One (1) year of experience as a journey level worker in building and equipment maintenance, construction, or repair work.
Option 2: Five (5) years of experience diagnosing and repairing diesel generators.
In addition to the options above, the following experience is required:
  • Extensive knowledge of lock-out/tag-out requirements and procedures.
  • Experience following oral and written instructions and performing heavy manual tasks independently.

Certifications/Licenses:

Valid driver's license.
Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

Successful completion of agency training and/or certification is dependent on supervisory direction, position need and training availability.
Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess some or all the following:
  • Knowledge of workplace safety standards such as hazardous materials handling.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical issues.
  • Experience coordinating with vendors, contractors, or other staff on repair and maintenance projects.
  • Proficiency in maintaining records, logs, or reports of maintenance and repair activities.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs. For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems' web site.

Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP). This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.

Social Security
All state employees are covered by the federal Social Security and Medicare systems. The state and the employee pay an equal amount into the system.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness
If you are employed by a government or not-for-profit organization, and meet the qualifying criteria, you may be eligible to receive student loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.

Holidays
Full-time and part-time employees are entitled to paid holidays and one paid personal holiday per calendar year.

Note: Employees who are members of certain Unions may be entitled to additional personal leave day(s), please refer to position specific Collective Bargaining Agreements for more information.

Full-time employees who work full monthly schedules qualify for holiday compensation if they are employed before the holiday and are in pay status for at least 80 nonovertime hours during the month of the holiday; or for the entire work shift preceding the holiday.

Part-time employees who are in pay status during the month of the holiday qualify for the holiday on a pro-rata basis. Compensation for holidays (including personal holiday) will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status in the month to that required for full-time employment, excluding all holiday hours. Pay status includes hours worked and time on paid leave.

Sick Leave
Full-time employees earn eight hours of sick leave per month. Overtime eligible employees who are in pay status for less than 80 hours per month, earn a monthly proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment. Overtime exempt employees who are in pay status for less than 80 hours per month do not earn a monthly accrual of sick leave.

Sick leave accruals for part-time employees will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment. Pay status includes hours worked, time on paid leave and paid holiday.

Vacation (Annual Leave)
Full-time employees accrue vacation leave at the rates specified in (1) or the applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA). Full-time employees who are in pay status for less than 80 nonovertime hours in a month do not earn a monthly accrual of vacation leave.

Part-time employees accrue vacation leave hours in accordance with (1) or the applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA) on a pro rata basis. Vacation leave accrual will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment.

Pay status includes hours worked, time on paid leave and paid holiday.

As provided in , an employer may authorize a lump-sum accrual of vacation leave or accelerate the vacation leave accrual rate to support the recruitment and/or retention of a candidate or employee for a Washington Management Service position. Vacation leave accrual rates may only be accelerated using the rates established WAC 357-31-165.

Note: Most agencies follow the civil service rules covering leave and holidays for exempt employees even though there is no requirement for them to do so. However, agencies are required to adhere to the applicable RCWs pertaining holidays and leave.

Military Leave
Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year.

Bereavement Leave
Most employees whose family member or household member dies, or for loss of pregnancy, are entitled to five (5) days of paid bereavement leave. In addition, the employer may approve other available leave types for the purpose of bereavement leave.
