The Opportunity
We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic Principal Engineer with excellent design, communication, technical, and sustainability skills who enjoys working collaboratively in multi-professional design teams, undertaking a client-facing role and taking responsibility for projects from inception to completion to achieve outstanding results.
You will be able to demonstrate solid experience in the field of Electrical Engineering Systems for building services across a range of project scales and building types, and a track record of multi-disciplinary design by bringing the best of Arup together.
You will join our creative and friendly Building Engineering team based in Cardiff. A team that seeks to set new standards in the built environment. Challenging orthodoxy will be instinctive to you. You will possess ambition on the Digital front and seek to lead its evolution in the built environment.
In this role you will provide leadership to the MEP team on a portfolio of projects locally, nationally and internationally, having the responsibility of ensuring correct technical approaches are applied to the project and staff are of suitable capabilities to undertake the tasks required. You will be expected to have project management experience and will have responsibility for the financial performance of the projects including liaising directly with clients on fees and commercial matters, effectively overseeing total project delivery by enabling effective team management and delegation to ensure the efficient and satisfactory delivery of multiple and complex projects, reporting to the Project Director.

In this role you will:
- Lead the spatial and technical co-ordination of the building services and their integration into the building design
- Produce engineering designs, calculations and specifications, using appropriate technical software
- Supervise and coordinate the work of others and coordinating work with engineers of other disciplines including in-house specialists
- Work across multiple projects with different design teams
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior members of the team
- Provide leadership on multi-disciplinary projects
- Participate in and lead bids for new opportunities including developing fee proposals and attending interviews
- Be responsible for resourcing and commercial performance of projects
Is this role right for you?
We are looking for people who:
- Hold an advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, preferably at Master's level, and have attained Chartered Engineer status through a recognized professional institution such as IET or CIBSE.
- Demonstrate a strong track record in winning and delivering diverse projects, with the ability to balance engineering priorities across varying scopes and complexities.
- Provide technical leadership to multi-disciplinary design teams, including coordination with external sub-consultants, while applying deep knowledge of sector-specific legislation, regulatory frameworks, and emerging trends
- Exhibit proven people management capabilities, with experience supporting and guiding team members across all levels to achieve project and professional goal
- Bring expertise in sustainable building design, ensuring compliance with both regulatory and voluntary standards related to energy strategy and environmental performance
