Project Engineer - Smart Monitoring

Join a leading force in geospatial and structural monitoring.
Plowman Craven's Smart Monitoring division delivers structural, environmental, and engineering monitoring solutions to major infrastructure and construction projects across the UK. From automated movement monitoring to environmental compliance and precision engineering surveys, we provide the data that keeps critical assets safe, compliant, and built with confidence.

We're now looking for a Project Engineer to support delivery across key monitoring projects, working closely with Project Managers to coordinate documentation, reporting, installation assurance, and technical workflows. This is an exciting opportunity for someone early in their career who wants exposure to large-scale technical projects while developing toward a full Project Manager role.
What You'll Be Doing
  • Support the successful delivery of monitoring projects across structural, environmental, and automated instrumentation.
  • Prepare technical reports, schedules, method statements, risk assessments, and other project documentation.
  • Process and prepare monitoring datasets for analysis using Excel and specialist software.
  • Coordinate logistics, site access, scheduling and production workflows across internal teams and subcontractors.
  • Conduct site visits to support installation checks, audits, and stakeholder progress reviews.
  • Contribute to commercial processes including forecasting, recording costs, updating financial systems, and supporting bids.
  • Brief delivery teams on project requirements and track progress against programme and scope.
  • Work alongside senior staff to refine processes and ensure high-quality deliverables across the division.
  • Deputise for Project Managers on allocated projects when required.
About You
  • A degree in civil engineering, geospatial, surveying or similar (or 1-2 years relevant industry experience).
  • Experience producing project documentation such as RAMS, schedules, progress reports or technical notes.
  • Strong communication skills, comfortable engaging with clients, contractors and internal teams.
  • Excellent organisation, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple tasks in parallel.
  • Confident with Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
  • Willingness to work flexibly, including occasional night/weekend work where required.
  • Ambition to progress toward a Project Manager level role.
Nice to Have
  • Experience with automated monitoring systems (civil/structural).
  • Knowledge of manual surveying or instrumentation systems.
  • Experience preparing technical proposals or discussing project scope with clients.
  • Understanding of construction contracts or project commercial processes.
What You Get
  • Employee-owned business - every employee contributes to and benefits from our long-term success.
  • A supportive and collaborative culture focused on technical excellence.
  • Professional development and career progression, including pathways into full project management.
  • Competitive salary + bonus scheme.
  • Generous annual leave allowance.
  • Company laptop.
  • Hybrid working with access to Harpenden and London offices.
  • Wellbeing and social events programme.

If you want to step into a role where your expertise genuinely matters - and you're ready to help lead the next chapter of our Smart Monitoring growth, we'd love to speak with you.

Plowman Craven is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace. If you require any reasonable adjustments during the recruitment process, please let us know.
