Introduction

Are you a curious and creative individual studying mechanical engineering and looking to develop your skills? Do you have a passion for understanding technology and enjoy working through challenging problems using a methodical approach? Would you like to contribute to a variety of projects for clients across Industrial, Consumer, Energy, and Defence industries?

Successful candidates can join us on a 6 or 12 month industrial placement.

There is no deadline for this role, as we recruit on a rolling basis. Once the position is filled, we will close the advert. We encourage you to apply as soon as possible.

Your role

The Mechanics and Design Department undertakes the development of innovative devices and equipment from concept to manufacture whilst overcoming considerable technical and design problems.

We combine user centred design, innovative mechanical engineering, a rigorous systematic approach to problem solving and a broad base of industry experience to form a powerful development team. Together, we form a dynamic and supportive development team. Our work ranges from undertaking complete product developments from concept to market, to providing consulting services for our clients on their technology, strategy or development processes.

Here are a few of the exciting and impactful projects we have worked on recently:
  • Vinfusion: A personalised wine blending and dispensing device with a touch of theatre.
  • Prism: End-to-end development of a smart wristband for them park access and virtual queueing.
  • Overcoming smart meter challenges for the last 5%.

What you'll be doing

This is an excellent opportunity for a mechanical engineering student with the passion and ability to achieve excellent results within highly demanding industries under tough commercial and time constraints. You will be using your technical skills to contribute to product development projects with support and guidance from seniors; from initial idea generation through to the delivery and manufacturing support for market ready products. This may include:
  • Carrying out research into cutting edge technologies and markets
  • Taking part in concept generation and problem-solving workshops
  • Evaluating ideas using evidence from physics-models or experimentally obtained evidence
  • Preparation of detailed designs, from system to component level
  • Manufacturing of parts and assemblies, hands-on or by liaising with suppliers
  • Testing of designs to ensure they meet the client's and end customers' needs

Please ensure you've included your A Level/Equivalent subjects and grades within your CV, alongside relevant university modules.

Covering statements are advantageous though by no means a necessity.

What you can bring

A successful Mechanical Engineering Intern in the Mechanics and Design Department will have the ability to:
  • Communicate with peers and clients to understand their problems and present your solutions
  • Use maths and physics to solve complex engineering problems
  • Design elegant solutions to client's problems
  • Obtain and interpret simulated/empirical test data to gain insights into design performance
  • Demonstrate an excellent academic record, studying for a relevant engineering degree

Please ensure your CV includes your A Level (or equivalent) subjects and grades, as well as any relevant university modules.

Covering statements are advantageous though by no means a necessity.
