Join United Utilities as a vital part of our area deployed engineering team who provide day to day engineering services to our operational assets within a designated operational county area,.reporting daily to the County Engineering Manager. Bring your adaptable, solution-focused approach to deliver expert process engineering support that drives the sustainable management and innovation of wastewater treatment processes.
You will collaborate closely with internal teams-Production Managers, Technical Oficers, Controllers, Area Managers, Risk Managers, Project Engineers-and external partners including Strategic Solution and Design Development teams, ensuring best-in-class service and operational excellence.
This role offers a dynamic on-the-ground County Engineering deployment, supporting operational teams across United Utilities' five-county service area. You will manage your workload with autonomy and prioritize quality to ensure that vital waste water infrastructure projects meet safety, environmental, and performance standards.

Key Responsibilities
- Ensure strict compliance with United Utilities' water industry standards, company policies, regulatory requirements, and quality management systems within your team.
- Lead the development and continuous improvement of waste water process standards, specifications, and best practices to optimise treatment performance and sustainability.
- An ability to influence technical solutions across a geographical operational area
- Oversee rigorous quality assurance processes to verify the accuracy and reliability of team deliverables in alignment with water sector benchmarks.
- Proactively identify and escalate risks impacting quality, budget, and project timelines to safeguard critical water services.
- Foster ongoing professional development and mentor junior engineers, building a resilient and skilled water process engineering team.
- Represent United Utilities externally to enhance our reputation as a leader in water sector innovation and operational excellence
Technical Skills & Experience
- Chartered professional engineer with proven expertise in water and wastewater process engineering.
- Experience in being part of multi-disciplinary teams in highly technical and commercial environments
- Experience in delivering capital and strategic projects and providing operational support in the water industry or other sectors.
- Broad understanding of water sector regulations, policies, and technical standards, combined with deep knowledge in specialist process areas such as treatment technologies, wastewater quality, or process optimisation.
- Emerging leadership capabilities, with experience engaging cross-functional teams and external stakeholders in complex water projects.
- Strong self awareness and commitment to continual learning within the evolving water industry landscape.
- Excellent technical communicator, capable of tailoring complex water engineering concepts to diverse audiences, from technical experts to community stakeholders
- The post holder must have knowledge of waste water processes and hydraulic design, A working knowledge is required of the interfaces with other disciplines.
- The post holder will have experience in data gathering and analysis.
- The post holder will also be able to communicate, to both technical and non-technical audiences, concepts and ideas regarding the application of particular designs.
- The post holder will have knowledge of waste water operational environments, operator skill levels and operating cost implications of the proposed Engineering solutions.
- The post holder will have an awareness of process and construction risks analysis techniques
- The post holder will demonstrate a personal commitment and encourage commitment in others to safety in all aspects of work.
- The post holder will be required to work on their own and as a member of a team.
- The ability to write clear, concise, accurate reports and specifications with measurable outputs is important as well as the ability to promote these "best of breed" standards and designs to others.
- The post holder will be based on site within a designated operational area, and will be expected to travel daily across a number of sites.
- Skilled trouble shooter and innovative problem-solver, with a proactive approach to meeting project milestones and enhancing operational reliability.
- Passionate about driving sustainable water management solutions and supporting United Utilities' mission to deliver safe, clean water to millions.
