Technical Safety Engineer – Upstream (LNG) Location: Paris-based (with international travel as required)
Contract Type: Long-term project role

The Role We are seeking an experienced Upstream Technical Safety Engineer to support a major international LNG development project. Reporting to the Upstream HSE Manager, this role is responsible for leading and coordinating all technical safety engineering activities across the upstream scope, ensuring safety is fully embedded throughout engineering, construction, commissioning and start-up phases.
The successful candidate will act as the technical safety focal point, working closely with EPCI contractors, subsea and onshore teams, and the wider project organisation to ensure all safety risks are identified, assessed, mitigated and managed in line with international best practice and project HSE requirements.
This role is typically based within the EPCI Contractor’s offices, with periodic travel to other project locations as required.
Key Responsibilities
  • Represent the Technical Safety discipline within the project organisation.
  • Embed safety engineering requirements across all upstream packages, including subsea, pipelines and EPCI scopes.
  • Lead and coordinate hazard studies including HAZID, HAZOP, SIL, QRA, DRA and Risk Reduction Workshops.
  • Develop, maintain and close out key safety registers including the Critical Event Register (CER), Major Risk Register (MRR) and TRA Assumptions Register.
  • Ensure ALARP demonstrations are completed, documented and approved.
  • Track and close all technical safety actions arising from PHA/HAZOP studies within project systems.
  • Finalise identification and documentation of Safety and Environmental Critical Elements (SECEs) and develop associated performance standards.
  • Interface with engineering, commissioning and operations teams to ensure safety requirements are fully integrated into design and execution.
  • Support pre-commissioning, commissioning and SIMOPS activities, ensuring safety systems and procedures are in place.
  • Contribute to ICSS integration, operational philosophies, commissioning documentation and lessons learned reporting.
  • Provide regular technical safety status updates to project management and stakeholders.
Project Environment
  • Large-scale upstream LNG development with subsea-to-shore infrastructure.
  • Multi-billion-dollar investment delivered over a multi-year construction programme.
  • Highly complex, multi-location execution involving international engineering teams and contractors.
Required Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Engineering (Safety, Chemical, Process or equivalent).
  • Minimum 8 years’ experience in upstream oil & gas technical safety engineering.
  • Strong experience delivering hazard studies and risk assessments on large LNG or upstream projects.
  • Proven ability to work across multi-disciplinary and multi-national project teams.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to represent the project professionally at all levels.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken).
  • Valid BOSIET and OGUK Offshore Medical certifications.
