Project Engineer - Waste & Resource Management
Deliver Sustainable Infrastructure. Solve the Problems That Matter.
Due to an increasing workload, Tetra Tech RPS is seeking a Project Engineer to join our growing Waste and Resource Management team in Belfast.
This is an exciting opportunity to work on impactful waste infrastructure, civil engineering, and building projects for both public and private sector clients. Our team delivers innovative, practical solutions to real-world challenges in a resource-scarce and urbanising world. If you're motivated by technically challenging work, sustainability, and delivering high-quality outcomes, this role offers the chance to develop your career within a supportive and multidisciplinary environment.
Purpose & Scope of the Role
As a Project Engineer, you will play a key role in the design, delivery, and management of waste and resource management projects across the UK and Ireland. You will be responsible for delivering civil engineering solutions, supporting environmental monitoring programmes, and providing site supervision where required. Your role will include managing landfill remediation projects, preparing technical and progress reports, attending client and design team meetings, and contributing to presentations and project updates.
You will also take responsibility for managing task-level budgets, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget, while maintaining high technical and safety standards. Working closely with colleagues across the Waste and Resource Management team, you will support an integrated and effective service to our clients and contribute to business development activities alongside senior staff.
Your Impact in this Position
You will contribute directly to projects that improve environmental outcomes, enable sustainable waste solutions, and support resilient infrastructure. Success in this role is measured through effective project delivery, strong technical input, and proactive collaboration. In the short term, you'll focus on delivering high-quality engineering outputs and site support. Over time, you'll develop greater responsibility for project leadership, client engagement, and commercial management, building a strong foundation for career progression within RPS.
Your Toolkit for Success at RPS
At RPS, we recruit using core capabilities-the essential skills, experience, and responsibilities required to perform the role effectively.
But here's the secret: there's no such thing as the 'perfect' candidate. If you feel you meet around 75% of the requirements for this role, we'd love to hear from you.
Technical Expertise in Waste & Civil Engineering
You will bring experience in civil engineering design for site development projects, ideally within the environmental or waste management sectors. This includes contributing to the design of infrastructure associated with landfill sites, waste facilities, and remediation schemes. A solid understanding of environmental monitoring requirements, engineering standards, and construction methodologies will be key to your success in this role.
Project Delivery & Management
You will demonstrate the ability to manage projects or work packages through their full lifecycle, including planning, design, implementation, and close-out. This includes leading or supporting design teams, managing technical resources, monitoring progress against programme and budget, and ensuring outputs meet client expectations. Experience in project management and coordinating multidisciplinary inputs will be highly valuable.
Site Supervision & Environmental Monitoring
Site-based work will form an important part of this role. You will undertake site supervision activities, support landfill remediation works, and contribute to environmental monitoring programmes. Your ability to operate effectively on site, maintain high safety standards, and liaise with contractors and regulators will ensure projects are delivered safely and compliantly.
Communication & Stakeholder Engagement
Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential. You will engage with clients, contractors, regulators, and internal teams, contributing confidently to meetings and presenting technical information clearly. Your ability to build positive working relationships and collaborate across disciplines will support successful project outcomes and long-term client partnerships.
Collaboration & Business Support
You will work closely with colleagues across the Waste and Resource Management team to deliver an effective and integrated service. This includes supporting senior staff with business development activities, contributing to proposal preparation, and sharing knowledge to support continuous improvement across the team.
Mandatory Requirements
To be successful in this role, you will hold a BEng or MEng (Hons) degree in Civil Engineering or a relevant environmental discipline, with a strong technical foundation. You will have experience leading or contributing to civil engineering design projects, particularly within environmental or waste-related sectors, and demonstrate the ability to manage projects and technical resources effectively. A full driving licence is essential due to the requirement for site visits and travel across the UK and Ireland.
Desirable Experience
Experience in waste and resource management projects, including landfill engineering, environmental monitoring, remediation, site experience, and contract administration, will be highly regarded. Experience working on landfill projects providing engineering and operational support is advantageous, as is progress towards or attainment of Chartered Engineer status.
