Role Overview

An experienced Senior Instrumentation and Control Engineer is required to support a portfolio of modification and capital projects within a large-scale industrial environment. The role covers the full lifecycle of instrumentation and control engineering activities, from concept development through detailed design, vendor coordination, and project execution.

You will act as a technical focal point for instrumentation and control engineering matters, working closely with project management, operations, contractors, and vendors to ensure safe, compliant, and cost-effective delivery.

Job Scope

  • Develop conceptual designs and detailed engineering solutions for instrumentation and control systems
  • Plan, monitor, and coordinate assigned projects and modifications in collaboration with project teams and end users
  • Act as the discipline focal point for in-house and subcontracted engineering activities
  • Review engineering deliverables to ensure compliance with project requirements, industry standards, and contractual obligations

Key Responsibilities

Project and Technical Leadership

  • Provide technical expertise for instrumentation and control systems across assigned projects
  • Support cost-effective and timely delivery of engineering services, including input to budgets and estimates
  • Perform feasibility studies and technical assessments to support project decision-making
  • Coordinate engineering reviews of designs, equipment, and interfaces with contractors and vendors
  • Ensure engineering activities are delivered in line with scope, schedule, budget, and specifications
  • Identify and report non-conformances and support corrective actions

Design and Engineering

  • Execute and review detailed instrumentation and control engineering activities
  • Prepare specifications for field instruments, control systems, fire and gas systems, analysers, and monitoring systems
  • Produce calculations including control valve sizing, orifice sizing, and thermo well wake frequency
  • Prepare detailed engineering deliverables such as layouts, hook-up drawings, loop diagrams, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, and interface drawings
  • Develop control philosophies, functional logic diagrams, and cause and effect charts
  • Support hazard studies including HAZOP and LOPA
  • Issue purchase requisitions and perform technical bid evaluations
  • Prepare material take-offs and bills of quantities

Health, Safety, Environment and Quality

  • Ensure all engineering activities comply with applicable health, safety, environmental, and quality procedures
  • Support process safety activities and system documentation updates
  • Participate in project risk assessments, reviews, and safety studies

Reporting and Communication

  • Provide accurate and timely technical input to project reports
  • Liaise internally with project teams, operations, procurement, and other engineering disciplines
  • Interface externally with contractors, vendors, consultants, and service providers

Work Environment

  • Operates with a high level of independence within defined project objectives
  • Work is subject to review by line management
  • May work as part of integrated project, investigation, or review teams

Qualifications and Experience

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in Instrumentation and Control Engineering or a related discipline

Experience

  • Minimum 10 years of engineering experience within oil and gas, petrochemical, or related process industries
  • Strong background in detailed design and project engineering
  • Experience working in operating plants or engineering consultancies
  • Exposure to project management and technical leadership responsibilities

Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of industrial instrumentation and control engineering
  • Solid understanding of international codes and standards including IEC, ISA, and NFPA
  • Experience with DCS and PLC systems, including architecture and industrial communication protocols
  • Proven ability in instrument and control valve selection and specification
  • Experience in vendor document review and package equipment engineering
  • Knowledge of fire and gas systems, safety instrumented systems, and SIL requirements
  • Working knowledge of analysers, vibration monitoring systems, and fibre optic communications
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills

Language and IT Skills

  • Proficient in spoken and written English
  • Strong general IT proficiency
