Role Overview
The MPD Operator I is an entry-level field role responsible for supporting and performing managed pressure drilling operations. The position requires hands-on technical skills, adherence to operational procedures, and the ability to work under supervision. The operator may assist in supervising junior staff and contributes to project success through safe and efficient field operations.
Key Responsibilities
Safety, Security & Compliance
- Maintain high standards of safety, security, and regulatory compliance
- Follow HSE policies, company management systems, and industry best practices
- Demonstrate safety awareness and adhere to operational procedures
- Support continual improvement in health, safety, security, and environmental performance
Quality
- Ensure compliance with company quality policies and operational standards
- Follow technical work instructions, test procedures, and documentation requirements
- Participate in audits and quality assurance initiatives as required
Operations
- Install, operate, assemble, disassemble, inspect, and test MPD and associated equipment
- Validate job hazard analyses (JHA) for wellsite operations
- Prepare accurate and timely job reports using operational tracking systems
- Access and follow relevant technical documentation and procedures
- Maintain readiness for 24-hour call-out as required
- Recommend operational improvements and assist in corrective/preventive actions
- Coach and mentor junior team members where applicable
Communication
- Report equipment failures and operational issues through appropriate channels
- Maintain effective communication with internal and external stakeholders
- Ensure clear understanding of roles, responsibilities, and expectations
Financial Accountability
- Use resources responsibly and within approved budgets
- Ensure expenses and procurement are processed according to company policy
People & Development
- Engage in training and compliance activities to develop technical and operational skills
- Support team development through mentoring, guidance, and feedback
- Collaborate with HR and technical development teams to enhance workforce skills and retention
Leadership & Vision
- Demonstrate ethical behaviour and adherence to company standards
- Act as a role model for operational excellence and safety practices
Qualifications & Experience
- Technical certificate, high school diploma, or equivalent
- Associate's degree preferred
- 0 - 1 years of relevant Oil & Gas field operations experience
- Competency in field equipment operation, procedures, and basic supervision
Skills & Competencies
- Basic technical knowledge of MPD operations
- Effective communication and team collaboration skills
- Awareness of safety, quality, and operational standards
- Ability to follow instructions and operate equipment safely
Physical Demands
- Work ranges from sedentary to heavy-duty, depending on field operations
- Lifting and carrying objects up to 50 pounds
- Exposure to heat, heights, noise, and other field conditions
- Repetitive motions including bending, twisting, squatting, climbing, and reaching
