Your role and responsibilities
ABB's Smart Power facility is a global centre of excellence for power conditioning technologies, specializing in the research, development, and manufacturing of advanced solutions. This year, we were proud to be named Exporter of the Year at the ExportNZ ASB Hawke's Bay Export Awards and to receive the Ziwi Excellence in Innovation Award.
As a Mechanical Design Engineer you'll play a key part in supporting ABB's success by carrying out maintenance activities that uphold the required standards of quality, cost efficiency, and production capacity for active products. The role involves close collaboration with R&D and Agile teams to provide technical input, along with strong communication with Supply Chain Management and Production teams. You'll also contribute to new product development by assembling prototypes and testing innovative design concepts.

You will be mainly accountable for:
- Design and model mechanical components and assemblies, ensuring function, safety, reliability, and manufacturability
- Develop verification test plans, build prototypes, and evaluate performance
- Produce manufacturing data and maintain technical documentation, including 3D models, schematics, BOMs, and assembly procedures
- Apply DFA/DFM principles and manage engineering changes across active products
- Investigate and resolve technical issues in collaboration with Quality and Process teams, while maintaining clear assembly instructions
Qualifications for the role
- Mechanical Engineering degree (or equivalent experience) with strong 3D modelling and drafting skills using tools such as SolidWorks and AutoCAD
- Hands‑on experience with DFA/DFM and working with sheet metal, plastics, heatsinks, and magnetic components
- Exposure to thermal and seismic design, with CFD experience considered an advantage
- Knowledge of IEC/UL product safety standards and experience maintaining accurate technical documentation
- Ability to manage multiple engineering change projects while communicating clearly with cross‑functional teams
- Familiarity with ERP and PLM systems (e.g., SAP, Windchill) and strong attention to detail, with experience in new product development viewed favorably.
