Overview

The Principal Commissioning Engineer provides technical leadership and ownership of commissioning activities from strategy through system handover. Acting as the focal point between Company, Customer, and sub-contractors, you will ensure systems are commissioned safely, compliantly, and right-first-time.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, approve, and implement commissioning strategies, plans, and procedures.

  • Act as technical authority for commissioning within allocated systems or facilities.

  • Oversee commissioning execution across mechanical, electrical, and C&I systems.

  • Ensure compliance with safety, regulatory, and project requirements.

  • Manage risks, Safe Systems of Work, and incident reporting.

  • Coordinate resources and sub-contractors to deliver work effectively.

  • Mentor and support junior engineers, review competency, and foster team development.

  • Report performance against Safety, Quality, Time, and Cost criteria.

  • Drive continuous improvement and capture lessons learned.

  • Leads by example, fostering a safe, inclusive, and high-performing team while effectively planning and managing resources to meet commitments.

Qualifications

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • Degree-qualified Engineer (Mechanical, Electrical, C&I, Process, Nuclear).

  • Experience commissioning complex systems in regulated or safety-critical environments.

  • Proven ability to lead commissioning activities and influence stakeholders.

  • Understanding of nuclear safety culture and compliance.

  • IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent; Membership of an Engineering Institution.

  • SC clearance or eligibility.

Desirable:

  • Experience on AWE sites or high-hazard commissioning.

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards.

  • Experience engaging with regulators or assurance teams.

What do I need before I apply

  • Active SC clearance or willingness to obtain SC clearance to carry out the role.

Benefits

Please note that this contract invloves working 11-day fortnight, which comprises of 12-hour shifts (assumption is 66hr week)
  • Onsite full time (Burghfield, Berkshire)
  • Daily allowance:
  • Per diem (days) £100/day if home is >30 miles from Burghfield
  • Per diem (nights) £250/day if home is >30 miles from Burghfield
  • £5 shift allowance on top of rate and there is also £5 retention allowance that is being accrued across duration of the contract and paid at the end subject to T's &C's.
