Engineering Project Manager
Edinburgh or Orkney (hybrid working)
About Orbital
Orbital Marine Power is a visionary Scottish renewable energy company focused on the global application of its pioneering floating turbine technology that can supply predictable power from tidal streams and ocean currents, every day, regardless of the weather. The technology has already been proven at full scale, with the company operating the world's most powerful tidal turbine since July 2021. This provides invaluable operational insight while clearly demonstrating the technology's commercial viability. With global interest in tidal energy accelerating, Orbital is expanding its team to support larger scale manufacture, multi turbine delivery and the next stage of commercial growth.
The company recently secured an additional £7m investment and won a major new project in Canada that will see at least six turbines deployed in one of the world's most promising locations for tidal energy generation. Orbital enters this next phase with strong momentum and a clear pathway to larger deployments and long term expansion.
What this role is about
You will work within the Design and Innovation team to help deliver the design programme for Orbital's next generation turbine. This is a technical role supporting the development and management of the design and quality processes used in the design team. The role combines structured planning with hands on coordination across multiple disciplines. You will help keep schedules aligned, decisions documented, risks visible and interfaces clear. It suits someone who likes bringing order to complex engineering work, enjoys collaborating with technical specialists and wants to stay close to real design and development activity.
For candidates with a strong technical background there is the potential to contribute to the development of technical innovations focused on reducing cost, improving performance and enabling future turbine variants.
What you will be doing
• Supporting the design schedule and maintaining milestones, dependencies and progress tracking for the O2 X programme
• Coordinating engineering processes such as interface management, design decision records and structured change control
• Facilitating risk assessments including FMEA and HIRA across multi discipline teams
• Ensuring assumptions and dependencies are clearly defined and documented between engineering groups and external partners
• Organising structured design reviews and capturing clear, evidence based outcomes
• Providing technical input where relevant through structured analysis, option evaluation and early-stage turbine configuration assessments
• Supporting third party verification and certification processes
What you will bring
• A degree in engineering, science or a related field
• Experience contributing to or managing multi discipline engineering projects
• Strong fundamentals in planning, documentation control and risk management
• Confident, clear communication and the ability to keep delivery moving
• Useful but not essential experience includes marine or offshore environments, formal project management training or hands on design work
Why the role matters and why it's interesting
This is a pivotal moment to join Orbital as the company expands its delivery capability and gears up for future deployments of their proven technology.Your input will help shape a platform that continues to evolve through operational learning, while contributing to future deployments focused on scalable, repeatable manufacture. You will collaborate closely with specialist mechanical, electrical, controls and marine engineers on varied, interdependent challenges.
