We are looking to add a Research & Development (R&D) Engineer to lead the development of elastomeric products from concept to completion. Based at our Aberdeen Headquarters, the role involves responsibility for designing and prototyping using established methods, with product validation supported by in-house testing. The successful candidate can expect to work on core products immediately, supporting the advancement of our packing element and cup portfolio for downhole tools.

Development of the successful candidate will continue through enrolment onto a structured path toward Chartered (CEng) or Incorporated (IEng) Engineer status. Achieved via an accredited Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Monitored Professional Development Scheme (MPDS) with a mentor assigned to support development.

Responsibilities:
  • Work with customers to advise on appropriate solutions suited to their requirements.
  • Develop and optimise traditional seal types using established processes, methods, and material knowledge to ensure customer scopes are completed.
  • Design, research, and develop innovative mechanical solutions, products, and prototypes to satisfy new challenges.
  • Produce engineering layouts, calculations, specifications, and maintain accurate project records.
  • Use Computer Aided Design (CAD) to model concepts and advise draughtsperson(s) of requirements.
  • Use Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to analyse, optimise and rationalise design proposals.
  • Manage engineering projects from concept through design, analysis, documentation, prototyping, testing, and completion.
  • Support in-house product testing with Lead Test Technician and Technician(s).
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including manufacturing, materials, testing, suppliers, and customers.

Essential:
  • Knowledge and experience of mechanical engineering design with 2-3 years' experience.
  • Analytical capability with experience performing stress and load calculations.
  • A BEng (Hons) degree (2:1 or above) in Mechanical Engineering - IMechE accredited.
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools - ANSYS Mechanical Preferable.
  • Experience of Computer Aided Design (CAD) software - SolidWorks Preferable.

Desirable:
  • A Master's (MEng/MSc) in Mechanical Engineering (2:1/Merit or above) - IMechE accredited.
  • Knowledge and experience of test fixture and pressure vessel design.
  • Knowledge and experience of product design using elastomers.
  • Knowledge of elastomeric and plastic manufacturing techniques.
  • Working knowledge of downhole tools and related industry standards.
