Ensure effective and safe execution of all field-based Electric Submersible Pump (ESP) operations by supervising installation and retrieval activities on rig and rigless jobs. The role oversees ESP deployment end-to-end in the field, enforcing standard procedures and quality checks to prevent failures or equipment damage. Acts as the focal point at well sites for artificial lift, providing expert technical guidance and coordination to sustain reliable oil production.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
JOB SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Oversee and coordinate all ESP installation (Run-In-Hole) and removal (Pull-Out-of-Hole) operations at well sites, both rig-based and rigless, to ensure they are executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with approved designs and procedures.
- Enforce the use of standard checklists, QA/QC tests, and best practices during ESP jobs to ensure proper assembly and prevent operational mistakes (e.g. cable damage or misassembly of equipment).
- Provide on-site technical supervision and guidance to drilling/workover crews and ESP service contractors during each job, addressing any issues in real time and troubleshooting equipment or installation problems as they arise.
- Verify that all downhole and surface ESP equipment (pump, motor, cables, sensors, surface power unit) is correctly installed and tested at the field site before handing the well over to production operations.
- Act as the primary field liaison between the Drilling - Artificial Lift engineering team and site operations, communicating any deviations, challenges, or lessons learned from the field to inform continuous improvement of ESP designs and practices.
- Participate in Dismantle, Inspection & Failure Analysis (DIFA) processes for pulled ESP equipment by providing on-site information and ensuring failed components are preserved and analyzed, so that root causes can be identified and mitigated in future installations.
- Coordinate logistics and preparedness of all materials, spares, and tools required for ESP field jobs, working closely with supply chain and ADNOC Onshore teams to ensure timely availability and optimal inventory levels for field operations.
- Lead by example in promoting safety during ESP operations - conduct pre-job safety meetings, ensure all personnel follow ADNOC safety standards, and immediately address any unsafe conditions or practices in the field.
- Mentor and train junior field engineers and operations technicians on proper ESP handling and operation procedures, building in-house field competency and ensuring that knowledge of artificial lift best practices is shared across the team.
GENERIC ACCOUNTABILITIES
Supervision
- Plan, supervise and coordinate all activities in the assigned field area to meet functional objectives. Provide guidance and on-the-job training to assigned staff (e.g. field engineers or technicians) to develop their skills and ensure they can safely and effectively carry out artificial lift operations.
Budgets
- Provide input for preparation of the artificial lift section's field operation budget and assist in monitoring expenditures related to ESP jobs. Highlight any significant variances or resource needs in the field to support effective cost control and justify additional resources when required.
Policies, Systems, Processes & Procedures
- Implement and adhere to the company's approved policies, processes, standards, and procedures during all field operations. Ensure that ESP field activities comply with ADNOC and Al Dhafra Petroleum guidelines and international best practices, and propose improvements or updates to procedures when gaps are observed.
Performance Management
- Contribute to the achievement of the Drilling- Artificial Lift team's performance objectives by effectively executing field operations and minimizing ESP early failure and downtime. Monitor key field performance indicators (e.g. run-life, mean time between failures) and provide input to the Drilling Manager on progress and areas for improvement, in line with the company performance framework.
Innovation and Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities for improvements in ESP field operations, such as new tools or methods to enhance installation quality or reduce rig time. Support trials of new Artificial Lift technologies (e.g. rigless deployment systems or advanced monitoring tools) by ensuring field readiness and providing feedback on their performance. Continuously seek to streamline on-site processes and adopt industry best practices for artificial lift. Design and implement new tools and techniques to improve the quality and efficiency of operational processes.
Health, Safety, Environment (HSE) and Sustainability
- Comply with all relevant HSE policies and procedures. Ensure that safety is prioritized during field operations by enforcing the use of proper PPE, conducting safety audits, and adhering to permit-to-work and well control guidelines. Promote a culture of safety and sustainability, aiming for zero incidents and minimal environmental impact in all ESP installation and workover activities.
Reports
- Prepare and provide regular reports and updates on ESP field activities, especially to his/her Back-To-Back (B2B). This includes daily job reports, failure reports, and lessons learned documentation for each operation. Provide input to section management information systems (MIS) and progress reports for management review, ensuring that field data is accurately captured and reported for decision-making.
Internal
- Reports directly to the Drilling Manager and works in close coordination with ADP Drilling on daily field activities. Liaises with Drilling & Petroleum Engineering teams, Production Operations, and Reservoir/Production engineers as needed to schedule interventions and align ESP operations with asset production goals. Regularly communicates with the Artificial Lift engineering staff at headquarters to report field performance and receive technical guidance.
External
- Interfaces with ADNOC Onshore (AON) drilling and ESP teams during rig activities, under the existing service-level agreement, to ensure alignment on procedures and timelines.
- Works closely with ESP equipment vendors and service companies (e.g. ESP manufacturers' field representatives, wireline or rig contractors) to coordinate their activities on site and ensure compliance with ADP standards.
- Engages with external specialists or contractors during failure analysis or when implementing new technologies, serving as ADP's field representative and point of contact.ESP equipment, accessories, and artificial lift surveillance systems vendors.
Minimum Qualification
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (preferably Petroleum, Mechanical, or Electrical).
Minimum Experience & Knowledge & Skills
- 10+ years of experience in artificial lift operations (with a focus on ESP systems), including substantial hands-on exposure to field installation and workover of ESPs. Prior experience working as an ESP field or crew supervisor in oilfield operations is required. Demonstrated expertise in downhole ESP equipment and surface power systems, with deep knowledge of ESP operational procedures, troubleshooting, and maintenance practices. Familiarity with rig and well intervention operations (drilling/workover rigs and rigless deployment techniques) and the logistics of managing equipment and crews in remote field locations. Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills are essential to effectively supervise multi-disciplinary field teams and coordinate with various stakeholders under high-pressure conditions.
Professional Certifications:
- Relevant professional certifications (e.g. well control certification, artificial lift technology training) will be an advantage.
- ESP field operations and troubleshooting expertise.
- Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) and surface electrical control systems for ESPs.
- Conventional & rigless ESP deployment methods and related well control practices.
- Drilling and workover operations basics (well completion, pulling/run in hole procedures, etc.).
- Mechanical & Electrical engineering fundamentals related to downhole equipment and surface power supply.
- Petroleum engineering basics (well performance, production optimization).
- Field instrumentation and data acquisition systems basics (downhole gauges, surface monitoring).
- Communication,
- Teamwork,
- Hard worker
- Organizing and execution (High level of initiative, leadership, and attention to detail in all field operations).
6. WORK CONDITION:

Work Environment
- Role requires frequent presence at well sites. Involves standing, walking, and climbing around rig equipment for extended periods. Must be able to work in outdoor field conditions and occasionally handle tools or equipment (within safety limits) during inspections or emergency responses.
- Primarily field-based in onshore oilfield locations with exposure to desert climate (heat, dust) and typical oil and gas operational hazards. Approximately 80-90% of the work time will be at field sites (on a rotational schedule), with the remainder in an office or camp environment for planning and reporting. Air-conditioned office environment is available during off-field time, but strict adherence to HSE protocols is required at site (100% PPE compliance, etc.).
