The Department of Physics has an international reputation for teaching and research Our strong international research profile is supported by excellent mechanical and electronic engineering facilities that are key to continued performance at the highest levels of research and in support of our teaching and knowledge exchange activities.

The Mechanical Workshop, in which the work will be based, is a small team designing and building high quality mechanical equipment to support research and development activities. The activity of the workshop covers the use of a wide range of traditional and modern engineering techniques to produce precision opto-mechanical components and a diverse range of other components to support research and teaching in the Department.

The successful candidate will be enrolled on the Modern Apprentice scheme and will undertake formal education by attending relevant courses provided by local colleges as well as learning skills working on the job in the workshop.
