The Senior Mechanical Engineer provides mechanical engineering expertise to Fuel & Low Carbon Technology, Oil & Gas Technology and Wells Fluid teams, supporting operational assets ranging from pilot plants to laboratory‑scale equipment. The role delivers engineering support to asset modifications, reliability improvements, and day‑to‑day operations to ensure safe, compliant, and reliable performance.

The post holder owns the mechanical engineering integrity of operating equipment and associated ancillaries, ensuring plant and laboratory equipment are designed, maintained, and operated safely, with no overdue mechanical inspections or outstanding recommendations.

The role supports the development and delivery of capital projects as required and works closely with the Engineering & Maintenance Manager to ensure compliance with mechanical engineering standards, company requirements, and best practice across the Fuel & Low Carbon Technology, Oil & Gas Technology and Wells Fluid teams.

Job purpose:

This role plays a key part in the assurance of mechanical engineering within an R&D business and will provide oversight and verification of the standardised engineering delivery and detailed engineering solutions.

The role will also provide operational line technical query support to the operating teams across our operating sites.

Success is developing and assuring our inherently safer design, safe systems of work, whilst facing the challenges of a research, development and technology driven business.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Drive compliance and assurance activities to ensure mechanical systems and equipment are designed and operated in accordance with bp Engineering Technical Practices and standards.
  • Act as the single point of accountability for the mechanical aspects of assets, systems, and procedures operated by the Services team.
  • Support operational teams in defining and delivering mechanical engineering scopes for project opportunities during concept evaluation and pre‑FEED phases.
  • Lead Management of Change (MOC) activities and participate in Process Safety Reviews (PSRs), HAZOPs, and HAZIDs, providing SME input, assurance, and effective challenge to risk management processes.
  • Select mechanical system components to ensure material suitability and chemical compatibility with defined operating conditions.
  • Provide assurance of pressure vessel design, inspection and testing regimes, code compliance, and technical analysis.
  • Deliver risk‑based assurance of safety‑critical mechanical equipment, supporting development and management of planned preventative maintenance strategies.
  • Ensure mechanical and pressure systems are maintained to enable safe, reliable, and efficient operations.
  • Provide technical assurance and review of third‑party engineering and design proposals.
  • Apply operational experience to support laboratory system design, development, and performance analysis.
  • Ensure compliance with Engineering Technical Practices and develop Site Technical Practices where required.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging technologies and provide guidance on their appropriate application.
  • Deliver technical training and mentoring to engineers and operations personnel, supporting capability development and continuous improvement.
  • Provide informal mentoring to strengthen mechanical engineering discipline quality and drive process improvement.
  • Represent applied sciences at the Mechanical Discipline Integration Forum, promoting knowledge sharing and lessons learned.
  • Participate in Root Cause and Failure Analysis (RCFA) investigations to address mechanical integrity and reliability issues.
  • Assure the technical integrity of mechanical systems through active development and review of Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs).
  • Manage and assure the quality of third‑party mechanical engineering support services.
  • Provide day‑to‑day mechanical integrity support to operational teams.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's and/or master's degree in engineering or related discipline relevant to mechanical engineering.
  • 10+ years' experience with Operations and Maintenance of mechanical systems.
  • Good working knowledge of relevant industry codes and standards, including ASME Section VIII, ASME B31.4, API 600, and API 6D, together with applicable regulatory frameworks such as India's Factories Act (1948), Environment (Protection) Act (1986), Oil Industry Safety Directorate (OISD) requirements, UK HSE standards, and US BSEE and EPA regulations.
  • Strong leadership skills, ability to influence and drive decisions.
  • Fluent written and spoken English language.
  • Good communicator, able to technically address with conviction verbally and written across Projects and Operations on technical matters at all levels of the company.
  • Able to demonstrate pragmatism when balancing technical decisions and operational needs (deliver safe & competitive solutions).

Desirable criteria and qualifications

  • Professional Engineer and/or Chartered Engineer status
  • 5+ years' experience of Research and development scale projects
  • Knowledge and experience of laboratory scale equipment and gas systems.
  • Working knowledge with relevant ASME, ISO and API standards
  • Experience with RCFA investigations
  • Experience with HAZOP/HAZID, Process Safety Reviews and risk assessments
  • Experience of working across different cultures, supporting different operating regions and engaging with a wide variety of customers or suppliers.
