Job Description

We are looking for an IT Systems & Infrastructure Engineer to support the delivery, installation and ongoing support of business-critical IT systems and networks that underpin Smiths Detection's customer solutions across Checkpoint and Hold Baggage environments.

Working as part of the UK Projects Team, you will support IT programmes, tenders, pre-sales activity, product support and live project delivery.

You'll work under the guidance of senior engineers and technical leads, contributing hands-on expertise across servers, virtual environments, networks and system integrations deployed at customer sites.

This is a highly practical, customer-facing role requiring strong troubleshooting skills, attention to detail and a commitment to operational reliability in regulated environments.

This role will largely be focused around Heathrow, however, you will be expected to travel to other airports across UK/IRE as and when required.

We can only accept applications from applicants who have lived and worked in the UK for a minimum of 5 years.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide IT, digital and network technical support for customer projects, trials, tenders, Field Service Engineers and Sales teams
  • Support site visits and customer meetings, helping define technical requirements and delivery activities
  • Assist with assessment of customer network infrastructure and existing systems
  • Install, configure, support and diagnose physical and virtual enterprise systems (servers and workstations)
  • Support products requiring system integration (e.g. EDX, CTiX, XCT, servers, workstations)
  • Assist with installations, upgrades, maintenance and breakdown response
  • Carry out scheduled and ad-hoc software upgrades, patching and security updates
  • Provide remote and on-site fault diagnosis and resolution
  • Support VMware environments, including deploying and maintaining multiple virtual servers per host
  • Troubleshoot VMware, OS, server and networking issues
  • Install operating systems, firmware, service packs and security patches
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation and support guides
  • Work in line with ITIL best-practice processes
  • Participate in an out-of-hours on-call rota
  • Accurately record time and expenses against WBS / work orders
  • Maintain a strong customer-centric approach at all times

Essential Technical Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience in IT engineering (installation, integration, support, maintenance, fault diagnosis)
  • Hands-on experience with VMware environments (ESX / ESXi)
  • Strong knowledge of Windows Server and desktop operating systems
  • Working knowledge of Linux / Unix
  • Solid understanding of TCP/IP networking, LAN/WAN connectivity and routing concepts
  • Experience supporting enterprise IT systems in customer-facing environments
  • Strong fault-finding, troubleshooting and log analysis skills
  • Confident working under pressure with high attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and customer-care skills

Desirable
  • VMware certification
  • ITIL Foundation or practical ITIL experience
  • Experience working with capital equipment / integrated digital solutions
  • Experience compiling SAT / UAT documentation
  • Experience supporting regulated or operational environments

Qualifications

Qualifications

HNC / ONC / City & Guilds in IT, Electrical, Mechanical or related engineering discipline (or equivalent hands-on experience)
