Newham College London, now merged with NewVIc Sixth Form College, is the largest post-16 education provider in Newham. With campuses in East Ham, Stratford, Plaistow, and the London City Institute of Technology (LCIoT) in Canning Town, we serve over 11,000 students across a range of pathways - including 16-18 study, adult education, apprenticeships, and higher education.

The Role.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering to deliver outstanding teaching across our Engineering provision, including T Levels, BTEC Level 2 and 3 programmes, and Higher National Diplomas.

You will teach a range of mechanical engineering disciplines, helping learners develop both the technical knowledge and practical skills required for progression into higher education, apprenticeships and employment.

Teaching areas may include:
  • Mechanical Engineering Principles
  • Materials Science
  • Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics
  • Engineering Mathematics
  • Computer-Aided Design (CAD)
  • Manufacturing Processes
  • Engineering Design and Development
  • Manufacturing, Processing and Control
  • Maintenance, Installation and Repair

You will create engaging and inclusive learning experiences using practical workshops, project-based learning and digital technologies, while ensuring delivery meets awarding body and T Level requirements.

Key responsibilities.
  • Plan, deliver and assess high-quality teaching and learning.
  • Teach across T Level, BTEC and HND Mechanical Engineering programmes.
  • Embed English, maths, digital and employability skills within the curriculum.
  • Design and assess assignments, projects and practical activities.
  • Monitor learner progress and implement timely interventions to support achievement.
  • Prepare students for employer-set projects, external assessments and progression opportunities.
  • Support industry placements and employer engagement activities.
  • Contribute to curriculum development and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in internal verification, standardisation and quality assurance processes.
  • Maintain strong links with engineering employers to ensure an industry-relevant curriculum.

Our Ideal candidate should have the following qualifications, skills and experience.
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Teaching qualification (PGCE, Cert Ed or equivalent) or willingness to work towards one.
  • Experience using CAD/CAM software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Fusion 360 or similar.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering design and manufacturing principles.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • Ability to inspire and engage learners across a range of levels and abilities.
