Project Engineer - Hydropower (12-Month Contract)

Location: Dublin ( Nationwide Site Travel)

Duration: 12 Months

Start Date: August 2026

Working Hours: Monday-Friday | 8 Hours Per Day

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Project Engineer to join ESB's Sustainable Rivers team, supporting the delivery of engineering improvement projects across Ireland's hydroelectric power stations. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in projects that improve fisheries infrastructure, enhance river connectivity, and support sustainable power generation.

Based from ESB's Dublin Head Office, you'll travel regularly to hydro stations across the Shannon, Liffey, Lee, and Erne catchments, managing projects from concept through to completion while ensuring the highest standards of safety, quality, and environmental compliance.

Key Responsibilities

Manage engineering projects through the full project lifecycle, from concept and design through procurement, construction, commissioning, and handover.

Develop and manage project scopes, programmes, budgets, risk registers, and technical specifications.

Ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.

Manage contractors, including site inspections, supervision, and performance monitoring.

Review Method Statements, Risk Assessments, and Health & Safety documentation before works commence.

Coordinate project activities between contractors and operational hydro station teams.

Support tender evaluations, contractor selection, and contract award processes.

Maintain project documentation, drawings, and technical records.

Promote and maintain a strong health, safety, environmental, and quality culture across all project activities.

Key Requirements

Essential

Degree qualified in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil Engineering, or another relevant engineering discipline.

Proven experience delivering engineering projects from conception through completion.

Strong understanding of project management principles.

Experience managing contractors and coordinating construction activities.

Good knowledge of Health & Safety legislation and best practice.

Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Strong report writing and organisational abilities.

Proficient with Microsoft Office and engineering/project management systems.

Full EU/EEA Driving Licence (or legally entitled to drive in Ireland).

Willingness to travel extensively to sites across Ireland.

Access to a vehicle.
