Birmingham Newman University has an exciting opportunity for a Health and Safety Manager to join our growing, ambitious and diverse University, named the Times University of the Year for Social Inclusion 2026.
The post of Health and Safety Manager sits within the University's Human Resources Department. The post holder will be responsible for managing the University's Health and Safety management systems and promoting safe working practices. They will develop and maintain health and safety standards; provide advice and guidance regarding compliance with relevant statutory requirements, legislation and regulations, and promote best practice in accordance with sector and professional standards. Key responsibilities will also include policy development, performing health and safety audits, supporting investigations, reviewing and where appropriate undertaking risk assessments and DSE's, lead or participate in working groups for the delivery of specific health, safety and wellbeing projects. They will also be required to prepare and present Health & Safety reports. The Health & Safety Manager will be responsible for designing and delivering effective health and safety and related training, including staff health & safety inductions.
The successful applicant will be a Chartered member of IOSH or an equivalent body and must have NEBOSH (National Examining Board for Occupational Safety and Health) National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety as a minimum. Experience of UK health and safety best practice and legislation along with relevant practical experience in managinghealth and safety in the workplace. Previous experience in Higher Education would be advantageous but not essential.
