West Coast South: Keeping Britain Moving 🚆
Stretching from Crewe to London Euston, West Coast South is part of Europe's busiest mixed-use railway-moving millions of passengers and 10% of the UK's freight each year. With over 1,000 miles of track and 64 stations, it's a vital link between major cities and local communities.
As part of the North West & Central region, we serve 1.3 million passengers daily and move 700,000 tonnes of freight weekly-covering a quarter of the national network.

Brief Description
In this role, you'll provide expert guidance to the Works Delivery and Supply Chain teams on all aspects of workforce health, safety, and environmental (HSE) management. Your role is pivotal in shaping a safer, healthier, and more sustainable workplace.
You'll champion positive cultural and behavioural change, inspiring the team to adopt best practices and continuously improve. Please note this role will cover the North West & Central region.
Strong working knowledge and practical experience of CDM (2015) is required.
Base location can be flexible.
About the role (External)
You'll provide hands-on support, coaching, and guidance to the Works Delivery and Supply Chain teams on all workforce health, safety, and environmental (HSE) matters. Your role is key in helping the team build confidence and embed a strong, proactive safety culture in everything they do.
You'll help collect and analyse HSE data, turning insights into action. By identifying trends and risks, you'll recommend practical, effective solutions that enhance safety and performance.
Working closely with national and local teams, you'll support the implementation of safety initiatives that bring real change. You'll also build strong relationships with Trade Union Safety Representatives and external bodies, ensuring open communication and collaboration through local forums and groups.
When incidents occur, you'll guide the team through investigations and formal reporting processes, ensuring lessons are learned and shared. You'll also coordinate audits, safety tours, and staff surveillance to maintain high standards and ensure compliance.
Regular reviews of Safe System of Work Plans will be part of your routine, helping to identify gaps and take swift corrective action.
In order to be successful in this role, we would like you to have/to be:
• Must be a member of the Institute of Occupational Health and safety (IOSH) at Technical (TechIOSH) level or above
• Knowledge of safety and compliance management processes
• Knowledge of relevant standards and procedures
• Knowledge of environmental management system
• Knowledge of operational railway environment
• Analytical capability
• Local Accident & Incident Investigation
• Knowledge of coaching techniques
• Good interpersonal, influencing, communication and organisation skills
We would also like but it isn't crucial to have/to be:
• NEBOSH diploma
• Institute of Environmental Management Award (IEMA)

Salary and benefits:
• Salary: Band 4B, starting at £35,582 and raising to £42,218.
