The role acts as the organisation's competent person under UK health and safety legislation, ensuring legal compliance, proactive risk management and operational support across all sites. The postholder is responsible for sustaining and improving the integrated management system (ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001) while promoting a strong, positive and accountable safety culture.

The postholder is responsible for sustaining and improving the integrated management system (ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001) while promoting a strong, positive and accountable safety culture.
Objectives
- Deliver comprehensive HSE and IMS support alongside the Integrated Quality Manager.
- Achieve and maintain zero enforcement actions.
- Demonstrate measurable year-on-year improvement in key safety indicators.
- Ensure successful ISO surveillance and recertification audits.
- Deliver demonstrable reductions in environmental impact.
- Embed and champion a strong safety culture across all operational teams and facilities.
Responsibilities
- Health & Safety Management
- Act as the company's competent person under the Health and Safety at Work Act.
- Develop, implement and maintain H&S policies, procedures and safe systems of work.
- Lead and review risk assessments, COSHH assessments and method statements.
- Lead accident and incident investigations, including root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Monitor HSE KPIs and produce accurate monthly performance reports.
- Manage contractor H&S compliance, including review of documentation, RAMS and site controls.
- Develop and deliver toolbox talks, briefings and targeted safety training.
- Liaise with enforcing authorities (e.g., HSE) where required.
- Oversee statutory inspections and compliance activities relevant to site operations (e.g. lifting equipment, LEV, pressure systems) where applicable.
- Environmental Management (ISO 14001)
- Maintain and develop the Environmental Management System and its associated documentation.
- Monitor environmental aspects and impacts, including waste, emissions, discharges and energy usage.
- Ensure compliance with environmental legislation, permits and regulatory requirements.
- Lead environmental improvement and sustainability initiatives.
- Manage waste contractors and coordinate internal and external environmental audits.
- Support spill response planning, environmental risk assessment and continuous improvement activities.
- Integrated Management Systems (ISO 9001 / 14001 / 45001)
- Maintain and continually improve the Integrated Management System.
- Lead internal audits and support external audits for surveillance and recertification.
- Manage non-conformances, corrective actions and preventive actions to timely closure.
- Support operational teams to embed ISO and regulatory requirements into day-to-day processes.
- Drive a culture of continuous improvement across HSE and IMS practices.
- Leadership & Culture
- Promote and maintain a positive safety culture across all sites and operational teams.
- Advise senior management on compliance risks, improvement opportunities and strategic decision-making.
- Support managers in delivering effective safety leadership at all levels.
- Chair/lead safety committee meetings and drive actionable outcomes.
- Lead site safety walkarounds, behavioural safety activities and engagement initiatives.
Qualifications/Experience
- Essential:
- NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent Level 6 H&S qualification).
- Proven experience in a heavy industrial, marine, manufacturing or engineering environment.
- Experience managing ISO 14001 and 45001 systems and supporting surveillance/recertification audits.
- Strong working knowledge of UK health, safety and environmental legislation.
- Demonstrated experience leading investigations and delivering root-cause analysis.
- Experience conducting internal audits and managing corrective actions.
- Desirable:
- IEMA qualification or equivalent environmental training.
- Lead Auditor qualification (ISO 9001, 14001 or 45001).
- Experience within shipbuilding, marine engineering or fabrication sectors.
- Professional membership (e.g., TechIOSH/GradIOSH/working towards CMIOSH).
- Training in structured investigation methodologies (e.g., ICAM, TapRooT).
