Job summary

An exciting secondment opportunity has arisen for an individual to project manage Harrogate & District NHS Foundation Trust's (HDFT) implementation of Martha's Rule.

Martha's Rule has been introduced by NHS England in response to the sad death of Martha Mills after developing sepsis in an NHS hospital. Martha's family's concerns about her deteriorating condition were not responded to promptly and there were missed opportunities in her care. Martha's rule will build on the evaluation of NHS England's Worry and Concern Improvement Collaborative to ensure the vitally important concerns of the patient and those who know them best are listened to and acted upon.

HDFT has a well-established Critical Care Outreach Nursing Team, who are well supported by the ICU team

We are looking for a clinically experienced health care professional with a proven track record in quality improvement to lead this work through its initial set up.

The postholder will be the project lead for HDFT's implementation of Martha's Rule to ensure the vitally important concerns of the patient and those who know them best are listened to and acted upon.

Main duties of the job

PROJECT MANAGEMENT
  • Provide leadership within multidisciplinary teams within the acute provider where the postholder is embedded to ensure that Martha's rule is delivered on time and to budget.
  • This will involve analysing complex information, persuasion skills, and hands on engagement with clinical and operational teams.
  • Seek engagement from colleagues to increase awareness of projects and overall.
  • The post holder will need to work autonomously and yet be collaborative in his/her approach.
  • Communicate at different levels, both within the acute trust, across networks and with NHS England.
  • Provide an interface between the acute provider where the postholder is embedded, the health innovation network and NHS England.
  • Provide data submissions to internal and external stakeholders
  • Provide Board level updates

KNOWLEDGE
  • Understand and be proficient in quality improvement methodologies (e.g. model for improvement) and project management tools, principles, and their application in a health setting.
  • Develop detailed project plans and ensure progress is monitored.
  • Knowledge of deteriorating patient pathways and inpatient ward procedures is essential.
