About the Role

Supported by a small, dedicated team of Health, Safety, Environmental, and Engineering professionals, the Head of HSE & Engineering/ Mobility will lead the safety performance and engineering strategy for our Engineering/ Mobility division.

This senior leadership position is accountable for ensuring compliance, driving continuous improvement, and embedding a world-class safety and engineering culture across all operations.
Key Responsibilities
Health, Safety and Environment (HSE)
  • Champion a positive HSE culture in line with our Safety F1rst principles.
  • Lead initiatives to improve safety culture and awareness across all levels.
  • Ensure personal and team safety, including that of colleagues, contractors, visitors, and customers.
  • Oversee HSE compliance for all assets, facilities, and estates within the division.
  • Provide safe and functional business assets through robust engineering standards.
  • Manage high-hazard environments with effective process safety and risk management.
  • Identify risks, implement infrastructure controls, and maintain layers of protection.
  • Ensure compliance with engineering and HSE standards, codes of practice, and regulations.
  • Drive improvement, innovation, and best practice across the division.
Operational Excellence
  • Advise Directors and senior leaders on HSE and Engineering policies.
  • Develop and implement systems to ensure compliance with current and emerging legislation.
  • Identify and manage relevant certification programmes (e.g. ISO9001, ISO14001, OHSAS18001, ISRS, ISO50001).
  • Build strong relationships with regulators and trade bodies (e.g. PRA, EI, UKPIA, EA, HSE).
  • Oversee HSE training and development programmes.
  • Manage internal audit, reporting, and performance monitoring for HSE and Engineering.
  • Produce regular divisional reports and ensure effective incident investigation and closure.
  • Define and deliver strategic, technical, and commercial engineering requirements.
  • Ensure asset and technical compliance across the division.
  • Lead due diligence, feasibility studies, and asset management for capital projects.
  • Drive improvements in asset compliance, reliability, and uptime.
Financial Management
  • Develop and manage divisional budgets (Opex and Capex).
  • Conduct cost-benefit analyses balancing compliance, performance, and value.
  • Ensure best value through efficient maintenance, project delivery, and value engineering.
  • Support delivery of business targets through effective financial stewardship.
Customer and Stakeholder Focus
  • Ensure safe, reliable, and compliant operations that meet customer expectations.
  • Liaise with authorities, planners, councils, and local communities to manage planning and operational issues.
  • Lead initiatives that ensure our assets deliver products safely and to quality standards.
  • Manage external stakeholder relationships to maintain operational excellence and community trust.
People Leadership
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the Mobility HSE & Engineering team.
  • Manage and oversee third-party contractors, consultants, and subcontractors.
  • Foster technical and leadership capability within the team to build a culture of excellence.
  • Ensure competency frameworks and ongoing professional development are maintained.
  • Provide visible, effective leadership in high-hazard and safety-critical environments.
About You

We're seeking a proactive, influential leader with:
  • Extensive experience in Health, Safety, Environmental, and Engineering leadership roles.
  • A strong background in high-hazard or safety-critical industries.
  • Proven ability to deliver strategic, technical, and commercial outcomes.
  • Demonstrated success in driving cultural change and continuous improvement.
  • Excellent stakeholder management, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent professional qualification preferred.
