About us

Archaeology South-East is an integral part of the UCL Institute of Archaeology. It was originally established as the Institute's Sussex Archaeological Field Unit in 1974. ASE is now responsible for the delivery of a comprehensive range of professional archaeological services, providing an interface between the academic activities of the Institute, commercial clients and other stakeholders and communities of interest.

ASE handles hundreds of research and project commissions every year. Much of this work is development-led archaeology, taking place on construction sites across southern and eastern England, with staff working from offices at Portslade (near Brighton, East Sussex), Witham (near Chelmsford, Essex), and on the London UCL Bloomsbury campus. The work includes archaeological excavation and survey, impact assessment, building recording, scientific analysis and conservation, community engagement, professional training, and research publication. This body of professional research is used to contribute to UCL teaching and ASE also provides training and opportunities to gain practical experience to UCL students.

About the role

To undertake the management and delivery of developer-funded commercial and research funded archaeological projects and to maintain an overall responsibility for project budgets, timetables, resources and logistics.

To take responsibility for the development and delivery of fieldwork training programmes both on- and off-site and including practical field skills, digital recording and ASEbase.

The postholder will play a key role within the ASE Fieldwork team to ensure the development and maintenance of field archaeologists training and skills and build networks within UCL and the commercial archaeology sector to promote professional training. The postholder will be required to liaise effectively with all stakeholders.

Though based in Portslade, East Sussex, travel to sites and other offices (Witham, London) will be required.

About you

You will have comprehensive knowledge and experience of UK commercial archaeology, underpinned by expert knowledge of British archaeology of all periods and supported by a degree in archaeology or related field. You will be, or are ready to start, managing projects on your own, balancing a busy work programme with high-quality outcomes. You will have an interest in training and professional development and experience of delivering and designing engaging training programmes. Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities are essential, alongside creative thinking and the ability to manage budgets and resources. The role requires a proactive, collaborative mindset and a commitment to inclusive innovation and organisational growth.

Please ensure that you submit a supporting statement as part of your application in addition to a CV and that you address each of the essential criteria in your application. When we shortlist, applications are scored according to how they meet each of the essential criteria. It would be very helpful if you could order this statement in line with the selection criteria in the Person Specification at the end of the Job description.

Candidates shortlisted for interview will be asked to prepare and deliver a short presentation. Further details will be sent with interview invites.
