Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

Are you excited by international business, curious about how government supports trade and investment, and looking for an internship where your work genuinely makes an impact? The British Embassy in The Hague is offering two hands-on internships within the Department for Business & Trade (DBT), giving you the chance to contribute directly to UK-Netherlands commercial engagement.

Who We Are:

The British Embassy in The Hague is part of a global network representing the UK's political, economic and consular interests in over 230 locations worldwide. DBT supports UK companies to trade internationally and helps foreign businesses invest and grow in the UK. DBT Netherlands works closely with Dutch companies interested in expanding to the UK, and with British firms exploring opportunities in the Dutch market.

By joining our Trade or Investment team, you'll gain rare, behind-the-scenes exposure to how a major Embassy operates and how government engages with international business.

What will you do?

We are recruiting two interns, each with a different focus:

As our Trade Intern, you will:
  • Support the team in managing trade enquiries from UK companies across diverse sectors;
  • Conduct market research, gather business intelligence and draft briefings and presentations;
  • Assist with the preparation and delivery of business events, trade shows and trade missions.

As our Investment Intern, you will:
  • Support the Investment team in organising events for prospective Dutch investors;
  • Help identify stakeholders in the Dutch market and manage event logistics;
  • Assist with account management, updating databases and maintaining key information assets.

Across both tracks, you'll work closely with experienced Trade & Investment Advisers and contribute to meaningful, real-world projects.

Why you should apply:

This internship programme offers:
  • A unique opportunity to see diplomacy and international business up close.
  • Direct involvement in commercial work that supports UK and Dutch companies.
  • A chance to develop practical skills in research, communication, event organisation and stakeholder engagement.
  • The ability to grow your professional network within an Embassy environment.
  • A supportive team that values curiosity, initiative and collaboration.

The role is ideal for students looking to deepen their understanding of trade, investment, government engagement and international markets.

What you'll love about the role
  • Working in one of the UK's most dynamic and forward-looking overseas teams.
  • Being trusted with meaningful responsibilities from day one.
  • Flexible working hours (20 hours/week) to balance with your studies.
  • Opportunities for learning & development, including training and job shadowing.
  • A friendly, inclusive and high-performing workplace where your contribution truly matters.
