Introduction

Are you a bridge builder between technology and science? Do you believe that the future of innovation lies in sharing knowledge rather than protecting it? As a Community and Project Manager for the OSHNED project (Open-source Hardware Infrastructure for The Netherlands), you will play a key role in transforming Dutch science into an open ecosystem.

As Community Manager and Project manager, you are the face and driving force behind the Open Hardware project and the link between all stakeholders. Your goal is not to build hardware, but to build a sustainable ecosystem. You bridge the gap between the five participating universities, the eScience Centre and the wider scientific community. You are responsible for day-to-day operations, national visibility and - perhaps most importantly - the strategy that ensures OSHNED continues to exist beyond these four years.

In this unique role you will be helping to establish the first national open hardware infrastructure in the Netherlands. You will collaborate with leading experts from various top-tier institutions and have the opportunity to make a lasting impact on how scientific instrumentation is shared and developed worldwide.

Job Description

Key responsibilities on project and community management:
  • Network Integration: You will coordinate the integration of the various open hardware hubs (TU/e, UU, WUR, Radboud UMC, TUD) into a single cohesive infrastructure.
  • Operational Project Management: You will manage the day-to-day running of the OSHNED community and monitor the progress of the various project phases. You will ensure that the administration and deliverables are submitted to NWO on time.
  • Sustainability & Roadmap: In collaboration with the Supervisory Board, you will develop a comprehensive sustainability plan to secure long-term funding and management.
  • Communication & Outreach: You will increase the national visibility of open hardware through promotional activities at other universities and knowledge institutions.
  • Event Management: You will initiate and coordinate national community events and hackathons to stimulate collaboration and knowledge sharing.
  • Governance Support: You will support the Supervisory Board and ensure transparent, inclusive decision-making processes that put the user's voice at the center.

Job Requirements

Who are we looking for?

The ideal candidate is a strategic networker with a passion for Open Science.
  • Liaison Officer: You have experience in community management or leading consortia, preferably in an academic or technical setting.
  • Strategic Insight: You are able to translate a long-term vision (sustainability) into concrete action plans.
  • Communication All-rounder: You speak the language of both the hardware engineer and the university administrator, and can communicate effectively in both English and Dutch.
  • Project Leader: You have strong organizational skills and can effectively manage the day-to-day operations of a national network. You are ambitious, able to work independently and autonomously, and can also motivate others.
  • Affinity with Open Hardware: You don't need to be a designer, but you understand the principles of Open Science and the value of FAIR hardware.

Conditions of Employment

An exciting position within an international yet personal university. You are right in the middle of the students, on a green campus within walking distance of the central station. Besides beautiful architecture, you will find varied workplaces and excellent sports facilities. We also offer you:
  • A unique position as Project and Community Manager in TU/e for 0.52 fte for 4 years.
  • A monthly salary of minimum € 5,705 to maximum € 7,297 for full-time employment, depending on your knowledge and experience (scale 12 Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
  • In addition to vacation pay, a structural end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
  • A favorable arrangement for more holidays or a sabbatical.
  • A selection model for additional fringe benefits.
  • Working hours in consultation for an optimal work-life balance.
  • Scope for your talent with advancement prospects and excellent development opportunities such as mentoring, workshops and coaching.
  • Partially paid parental leave and reimbursement for commuting expenses, working from home and the internet.
  • A generous employer contribution to the favorable ABP pension plan.
  • Unlimited access to the modern on-campus TU/e Student Sports Center at an exceptionally affordable rate.

The role is part of an ambitious project funded by Open Science NL that aims to integrate successful open-hardware initiatives in the Netherlands into a robust infrastructure (OSHNED) through national coordination. This involves maintaining a centralized digital repository, providing training, and identifying existing open-source hardware. The project will have three phases: setup, implementation and expansion, and long-term sustainability and refinement. On top of making hardware more accessible for education, exploration and reproducing scientific results, OSHNED can free up money annually for scientific research. The national consortium consists currently of TU/e, TUDelft, UU, WUR, Radboud UMC, eScience Center.

You will collaborate with the Open Science initiatives at TU/e, the hardware engineer in TU/e innovation Space and of course with the OSHNED Supervisory Board and Open Science Hardware community in the Netherlands.
