Are you a senior HSE leader ready to make a meaningful impact in a purpose-driven organisation? We're looking for a Head of HSE to join our HSE team at Bettys & Taylors Group.
This is a critical senior role, reporting to the Governance, Risk and Compliance Director, with responsibility for setting the group-wide HSE strategy, providing independent assurance, and shaping a positive, proactive safety culture across manufacturing, retail, logistics and office environments.
The role will offer hybrid working based from Harrogate (HG2 7LD). Please note that this position is not suitable for fully remote applicants, as regular on-site collaboration in Harrogate is essential.

Key Responsibilities
- Leading HSE across a complex, multi-site organisation, driving a proactive, proportionate and commercially balanced approach to risk management
- Defining and owning the enterprise-wide HSE strategy and multi-year roadmap aligned to business growth and change programmes
- Acting as principal HSE advisor to the Executive team, providing independent and objective assurance on HSE risks and performance
- Integrating HSE into the enterprise risk framework and aligning HSE obligations with brand and reputational risk
- Developing, embedding and continuously improving HSE policies, frameworks and management systems
- Leading environmental compliance and performance, working closely with sustainability and ESG stakeholders
- Owning serious incident investigation and reporting, including RIDDOR-reportable events
- Engaging with regulators, insurers and external advisors on all HSE-related matters
- Reviewing and analysing leading and lagging indicators, presenting insight and recommendations to senior leaders
- Leading HSE transformation activity, championing continuous improvement, innovation, and data-led insight
- Owning the HSE budget and overseeing cost-of-risk management, including insurance and claims trends
- Building a strong safety culture through visible leadership, clear communication and effective stakeholder engagement
What You Bring
You will be a confident, credible and values-led HSE professional, comfortable operating at senior level and influencing across a diverse organisation.
- Extensive, demonstrable experience and in-depth working knowledge of Health, Safety and Environmental legislation, compliance and best practice.
- Proven experience operating within complex environments such as manufacturing, food production, catering and/or retail.
- Highly developed leadership, communication and influencing skills, with a strong track record of driving positive cultural change.
- Leads by example, actively promotes company values and constructively challenges behaviours that may undermine a safe and inclusive working environment.
- Champions a "one business" mindset, fostering strong collaboration and partnership working across functions and sites.
- Strong knowledge of relevant industry-specific standards and regulations, including food manufacturing, fire safety and machinery regulations.
- Experienced in working within governance frameworks, policies and procedures, while applying pragmatic judgement to adapt approaches in support of evolving business needs.
- Proven experience in the design and delivery of effective HSE training and awareness programmes.
- Experience of working with Occupational Health and internal auditing.
- Confident user of data and systems, with intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- NEBOSH diploma or equivalent.
- IOSH membership working towards or has Chartered status.
- Champions community, charity and environmental initiatives.
- Require full driving licence to be able to visit our sites across Yorkshire.
