Balfour Beatty is playing a leading role in the delivery of the ASTI (Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment) programme-a multi-billion-pound national infrastructure framework upgrading Scotland's electricity transmission network and enabling the transition to Net Zero.

As part of this, our Regional Scotland business has been awarded key works on the Netherton Hub near Peterhead, delivered through SSEN Transmission's Pathway to 2030 programme.

This is a flagship energy infrastructure project, delivering:
  • A High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Converter Station forming part of the Spittal to Peterhead link
  • A 400kV substation and 132kV substation
  • Complex civil engineering and building works supporting grid transformation and renewable energy integration
Once complete, the project will support the long-distance transmission of renewable energy across the UK, strengthening energy security and enabling future generation connections.

What you'll be doing

About the Opportunity

We are seeking a Senior Project Manager / Superintendent to take full leadership of major civil engineering delivery packages on this high-profile project.

This is a senior, end-to-end delivery role where you will have overall accountability for project performance, leading large multidisciplinary teams across a fast-moving, high-value framework environment.

Key Responsibilities

As a senior leader on the project, you will:
  • Take full ownership of project delivery from planning through to commissioning and handover
  • Lead complex civil engineering works including:
      • Substation platforms and enabling works
      • Large-scale earthworks and groundworks
      • Drainage, utilities and access infrastructure
      • Reinforced concrete structures and foundations
      • Interfaces with overhead lines, substations and cable routes
  • Drive programme, cost, quality and risk performance across multiple work fronts
  • Lead governance, reporting and stakeholder engagement (client, supply chain and internal teams)
  • Manage procurement strategy and subcontractor delivery across complex packages
  • Lead risk and opportunity reviews and escalate key project challenges where required
  • Build, develop and inspire high-performing project teams

  • Proactive management of risk, commercial performance and stakeholder engagement
What We're Looking For

You'll be an experienced infrastructure leader with a strong civil engineering background:

Essential:
  • 10+ years' experience delivering major infrastructure or energy projects
  • Proven leadership of large-scale civil engineering works and multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong commercial awareness and experience managing contracts (NEC or similar)
  • Track record of implementing safe systems of work and driving HSE performance
  • Excellent stakeholder and communication skills across all levels
Desirable:
  • Experience in transmission, substations or energy infrastructure
  • Professional membership (e.g. APM, ICE)
  • Degree-qualified in engineering/construction (or equivalent)
  • SMSTS / CSCS certification
