Legal Counsel, Renewable Energy Location: Japan, Tokyo A leading international renewable energy developer is seeking a Legal Counsel to support its renewable energy platform across Japan. This position will support a broad portfolio including battery energy storage systems (BESS) and solar developments, while partnering closely with regional business, finance, engineering and commercial stakeholders. The role offers strong exposure to project development, commercial contracting, regulatory matters and cross-border transactions within a dynamic international environment. Key Responsibilities Provide legal and regulatory support across renewable energy development activities, including project structuring, entity establishment, licensing and regulatory approvals Support legal matters relating to utility-scale renewable energy projects, including solar, wind and battery energy storage systems (BESS) Advise on energy and power market regulations, tender participation, commercial agreements and project-related contractual matters Draft, review and negotiate a wide range of agreements in both English and Japanese, including:- Non-disclosure agreements- EPC and construction agreements- Joint venture and partnership agreements- Commercial and procurement contracts- Corporate and financing-related documentation- Transaction and acquisition documentsProvide legal guidance on broader corporate and operational matters including procurement, insurance, compliance, employment-related issues and project disputes Support M&A and investment activities in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders Work closely with regional business teams across legal, finance, engineering, procurement, asset management and commercial functions across APAC Monitor legal and regulatory developments impacting renewable energy and infrastructure businesses and support ongoing compliance initiatives Identify and mitigate legal and commercial risks associated with project development and operational activitiesRequirements Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from a reputable university and qualified to practice law in Japan (Bengoshi preferred) Approximately 3-5 years of relevant legal experience Experience supporting infrastructure, energy, project development or commercial transactions highly preferred Prior in-house legal experience advantageous but not mandatory Strong drafting and negotiation skills across both Japanese and English Ability to operate within an international and cross-functional business environment
