Job Description:
The Fireproofing Helper is responsible for assisting in the application, repair, and maintenance of Passive Fire Protection (PFP) systems on critical offshore structural steel and equipment to ensure asset integrity and personnel safety. Working under direct supervision, the role supports senior applicators in implementing preventive, predictive, and corrective fireproofing strategies while maintaining strict compliance with offshore Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) standards and environmental regulations.
Job Description:
- Assist in the application of specialized fireproofing systems, including intumescent coatings and cementitious fireproofing, ensuring compliance with approved specifications and design requirements. Prepare steel surfaces for fireproofing by performing cleaning, degreasing, and assisting with abrasive or mechanical surface preparation to achieve the required adhesion profile.
- Support the installation of reinforcement mesh, lath, pins, and anchors necessary for cementitious fireproofing systems.
- Assist in the mixing, handling, and application of fireproofing materials using appropriate tools such as spray pumps, mixers, trowels, and hand application equipment.
- Transport, set up, and perform basic maintenance of PFP equipment, including pumps, hoses, mixers, and associated consumables.
- Help establish and maintain "Application in Progress" zones by installing safety barriers, warning signage, and exclusion areas to mitigate risks associated with high-pressure spraying and chemical handling.
- Assist in masking and protecting adjacent equipment and surfaces to prevent contamination or overspray.
- Support senior technicians in measuring and verifying coating thickness and ensuring uniform application in accordance with project specifications.
- Maintain organized records of application locations, work progress, and material consumption using manual or digital reporting systems.
- Identify and report visible defects such as cracking, delamination, mechanical damage, corrosion, or degradation of existing fireproofing systems under the guidance of a specialist.
- Assist in the repair and patching of damaged or deteriorated PFP systems during routine maintenance and shutdown activities.
- Handle, store, and dispose of fireproofing materials in accordance with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and environmental regulations.
- Ensure proper housekeeping by keeping work areas clean, organized, and free from hazards.
- Participate in Permit to Work (PTW) processes, Job Safety Analyses (JSA), and toolbox talks to ensure safe task execution.
- Use and maintain appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including respirators, gloves, protective clothing, and eye protection.
- Coordinate with other maintenance disciplines to ensure fireproofing activities align with operational
schedules.
- Support emergency response or integrity-related activities requiring fireproofing interventions.
Educational Level and Training:
- Secondary School Certificate or equivalent.
- Vocational or technical training in industrial coating, fireproofing, construction, or a related discipline is advantageous.
- Basic training in Passive Fire Protection (PFP) application is desirable.
- Familiarity with international standards such as UL, ASTM, or ISO related to fireproofing is an advantage English: Basic proficiency in reading and understanding safety instructions, technical procedures, and product labels.
Required Experience and skills:
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in fireproofing, industrial painting, construction, or maintenance within the oil and gas, marine, or heavy industrial sectors. Offshore experience is preferred.
- Basic understanding of Passive Fire Protection (PFP) systems and their role in structural integrity during fire events.
- Familiarity with surface preparation techniques and reinforcement installation.
- Ability to safely handle fireproofing materials and application equipment.
- Awareness of corrosion mechanisms and the interaction between coatings and substrates.
- Strong commitment to Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) standards. Good teamwork and communication skills.
- Physical fitness and the ability to work at heights and in confined spaces. Basic documentation and reporting skills.
