SUMMARY OF POSITION

Under general supervision, performs maintenance and repair of the water distribution and/or wastewater collection system. Employees in this classification perform technical, manual work. This position is responsible for repairing water leaks, repairing, and installing sewer and water mains, flushing and maintaining the quality of the water and operates and maintains moderate to complex equipment. Performs related work as required.

Depending on the applicant's experience, licenses, and skills, the position can be filled at Level I, Level II, Level III, or Level IV.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

When assigned to Water Utilities Quality Sampling I
  • Flushes hydrant on defined pre-determined routes
  • Calculates and tracks water used
  • Cleans elevated storage tank sites
  • Assists plant operators perform miscellaneous maintenance on basic elevated storage instruments and pumping equipment

When assigned to Water Utilities Quality Sampling II

  • Duties of Level I carry over, in addition to:
  • Handles basic customer service requests regarding dirty water calls.
  • Performs hydrant flow tests and calculates available fire flow.
  • Uses GIS to identify valves, hydrants, manholes water mains, sewer mains and water meters.

When assigned to Water Utilities Quality Sampling III

  • Duties of Level I carry over, in addition to:
  • Responds to customer complaints regarding water quality and water pressure.
  • Maintains and adjusts automated water flusher.
  • Takes water samples for compliance with lead and copper rule and nitrification requirements.

When assigned to Water Utilities Quality Sampling IV
  • Duties of Level I carry over, in addition to:
  • Takes bacteriological samples.
  • Schedules, takes, and reviews water samples for construction of new water mains.
  • Calibrates handheld
  • Takes daily chlorine samples.
  • Prepare and submits DLQRS report.
  • Takes water samples for TTHM reporting.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Must pass a drug screen and background check.
  • Must have Class C Texas Driver's License.

Physical Demands/Supplemental

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Tasks involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds). Some tasks require visual and odor perception and discrimination.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Tasks may risk exposure to extreme cold/heat or extreme weather conditions, strong odors or smoke, dust or pollen, and toxic chemicals.
