Job Description

This Grid Automation and Controls group at NREL focuses on conducting research projects to improve power systems operations. We develop cutting edge solutions and work closely with industry and utility partners to enhance grid reliability, resilience, and security. We are seeking a graduate PhD student intern with a strong background in Power System Simulation, synchrophasor measurement applications and signal processing technology. This will be a 3-month internship with the possibility to extend to 12-months.

The intern will address stability assessment and monitoring challenges associated with renewable integration in inverter-dominated power systems. Key responsibilities include:
  • Performing simulation studies to investigate stability margin based on measurement-data in renewable-heavy power systems.
  • Exploring enhanced methods for the existing applications (such as ambient-data-based inertia estimation or oscillation source identification) based on the field data provided by our industry partners.
  • Contributing to or leading the writing of research papers, collaborating closely with NREL researchers, and delivering high-impact work.

Basic Qualifications
Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor's degree program from an accredited institution.
Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor's degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.

Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master's degree program from an accredited institution.
Post Graduate: Earned a master's degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.
Graduate + PhD: Completed master's degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.

Additional Required Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled Ph.D. student in electrical engineering or other relevant fields.
  • Strong background in power system modeling and simulations, with familiarity in power system simulation tools such as PSSE, PSLF, PSCAD, or RSCAD/RTDS.
  • Experience in processing various sensor data, including Phasor Measurement Units, controller monitors, and digital fault recorders, etc.
  • Proficiency in signal processing and data analysis for large-volume data.
  • Self-motivated, with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adhere to project timelines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in developing real-world synchrophasor measurement applications.
  • Proficiency in using machine learning technics for PMU-applications.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: / Annual Salary Range: $50,200 - $80,300

Benefits Summary
Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance; 403(b) Employee Savings Plan with employer match*; and sick leave (where required by law). NREL employees may be eligible for, but are not guaranteed, performance-, merit-, and achievement- based awards that include a monetary component. Some positions may be eligible for relocation expense reimbursement. Internships projected to be less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for medical, dental, or vision benefits.

Badging Requirement
NREL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. Intern assignments extending beyond six months will be subject to this requirement.
