Your role and responsibilities
In this role, you will have the opportunity to provide strategic legal advice and uphold the highest standards of integrity within ABB. The work model for the role is: Hybrid #LI-Hybrid This role is an individual contributor role and will report to the ABB Motion Regional General Counsel for the Americas in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, with a dotted-line to the business leader for Motion - LATAM in Santiago, Chile. The preferred candidate will be based in Mexico City. Other locations in Latin America where the ABB Motion business maintains a staffed office will also be considered. The successful candidate will be expected to work from ABB offices on a regular basis - ordinarily at least two days per week. Some travel (~5-10%), including outside of the successful candidate's home country, may be required. This role supports the Motion Business Area LATAM (Mexico, Central America & Caribbean) from Mexico. You will be mainly accountable to: • Function as a strategic Business Partner for the Motion Business in the region, whilst maintaining an independent position. • Develop close working relationships with ABB internal customers including commercial business teams, sales, finance, HR, EHS, and supply chain. • Develop contract strategy, draft and negotiate a variety of complex, commercial agreements based on customer and ABB requirements and ABB policies, considering risk, pricing, scope, and schedule. • Collaborate with other Legal Counsels in the development of contract standards, templates, and guidelines and ensure their implementation and operationalization within Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. • Provide training and guidance to the Motion businesses in Mexico, Central America & the Caribbean. • Work with the Motion global supply team to ensure that relevant subcontracts contain appropriate contract terms and conditions to protect ABB's interest, including flow-down of main contract terms. • In collaboration with other members of the global ABB legal team and internal and external subject matter experts, provide general guidance and management of legal issues in respect of competition laws, privacy and data protection including GDPR, product liability, warranty, claims, employment matters, investigations, litigation support, and other legal matters that arise within the Motion Business Area. • Be an active member of the Motion Americas and global Legal & Integrity team assisting with other legal matters and projects as assigned. Qualifications for the role
- Law degree from a fully accredited university.
- Member in good standing of the bar with eligibility to practice law in Mexico and no disciplinary history in any jurisdiction.
- 7+ years post qualification experience practicing commercial law, either as a private practice associate, with the government, or as an in-house legal counsel.
- Fluency in both Spanish and English with strong communication, presentation and networking skills, and ability to review legal documents in both languages is a must.
- Very strong contract drafting and negotiation skills and ability to work in a complex international environment.
- Experience as in-house legal counsel with a multinational industrial and technology company that sells services and products to oil & gas, mining, pulp and paper, renewable energy, water, HVAC, food and beverage, or other similar industries is highly desirable.
- Cross-training, experience, or admission to practice law across multiple jurisdictions in LATAM and/or elsewhere in the world is highly desirable.
- Experience with projects related contracts, distribution/partner agreements, government contracting, and intellectual property is desired.
- Experience with digital law (SAAS, cyber law, AI, data protection and privacy, etc.) is desired.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Must be well-organized and able to manage multiple assignments simultaneously under deadline pressure.
