Job Summary
The Senior Automotive Specialist for Diesel Generator Maintenance performs maintenance, diagnoses mechanical problems, and repairs motorized/mechanical equipment and vehicles for the Anchorage School District. Maintenance employees work a 4/10 schedule with weekends and holidays off. The Anchorage School District offers paid leave and a very competitive benefits package which includes medical, dental, vision, HSA, FSA and life insurance. This position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).

Physical/Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking, and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to communicate by oral and written means in an appropriate business manner and have cognitive skills to understand instructions, readily recall facts and details, handle conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Job Requirements
The following are required:
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- A minimum of four years of experience within the last six in heavy equipment, light vehicle, or support equipment repair.
- Experience performing preventive maintenance of emergency diesel generators.
- Must possess a valid Alaska class A commercial driver's license.
- Must acquire one Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification in either automotive or medium/heavy truck repair within the probationary period and one additional certification within 12 months of hire.

Essential Job Functions
- Interprets and diagnoses mechanical problems and defects in both motorized and non-motorized equipment.
- Operates heavy equipment and makes use of other appropriate tools, methods, and materials to perform major overhaul of engines, transmissions transfer cases and differentials, tune-ups, electronic fuel management, brakes, and wheel bearings.
- Troubleshoots, analyzes, and repairs mechanical problems on trucks, mowers, tractors, graders, sweepers, and other types of construction equipment.
- Performs diagnostics and repairs electrical systems, including but not limited to diesel fuel management systems, electronic transmissions, starting and charging systems, lighting systems, pneumatic and hydraulic systems and other electronics.
- Performs preventive maintenance on emergency diesel generators and minor and major mechanical items such as repair and overhaul of engines, transmissions, differentials, air brakes, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
- Coordinates the shut-down and restart process of emergency generators with leadership at affected facilities.
- Repairs small engines and power tools.
- Rebuilds carburetors, fuel pumps, starters, alternators, hydraulics, pneumatics, and electrical systems.
- Performs tire and brake repairs, service calls, and road tests of vehicles.
- May be required to do body work, painting, metal straightening, and the repair or replacement of glass.
- Performs both gas and electric welding and cutting required in the maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
- Works shifts that are subject to change, at times without direct supervision.
- Maintains records of parts and supplies and writes reports as required.
- Performs vehicle retrieval and field service calls as needed.
- Assists with maintenance of yard and shop.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships and works cooperatively within established maintenance and safety procedures.
