Your role and responsibilities

ABB Corporate Research Center in Sweden is located in Västerås, about 100 kilometers west of Stockholm. Together with our colleagues in other R&D centers we develop technologies for future products and services for ABB's core businesses. Functional safety communication coupled with high integrity computing is crucial foundation of modern industrial Distributed Control System (DCS) to keep the safe and stable operation of mission-critical systems such as power plants and large process automation factories. When the new generation DCS is evolving to network-centric architecture and virtualized deployment, new challenges need to be solved in terms of latency, reliability, complexity, etc. Details: • Start in March/April 2025 for a period of 6 months, 30 ECTS • Full-time on-site at ABB Corporate Research in Västerås • ABB may cover the accommodation in Västerås and provide gratification at finish Your responsibilities: • How well does the new standard OPC UA Safety and its stack implementation work in a realistic embedded hardware and software environment? How to evaluate and optimize the latency and reliability? • Review literatures and identify gaps • Port the existing OPC UA Safety stack to the existing MPSoC hardware and Linux software platform • Design systematic test case to evaluate the latency and reliability of the stack • Perform experimental measurement and theoretical analysis of the performance KPIs • Propose and implement potential measures that can improve • Write scientific publication (desirable) to share the findings to larger community

Qualifications for the role

  • Strong interests in learning new things
  • Strong C/C++ programming skills in Linux
  • Enough knowledge about TCP/IP stacks
  • Enough knowledge about real-time embedded systems
  • Good problem solving and self-driven
  • Good spoken and written English
  • Knowledge on industrial network protocols such as OPC UA is a plus
  • Interest in scientific publication is a plus
