WHO WE ARE:
Heelstone Renewable Energy is a utility-scale solar developer headquartered in Durham, NC with expertise in originating, financing, constructing, and operating solar photovoltaic projects. Heelstone has developed and achieved commercial operation on over 80 solar projects with an aggregate generating capacity exceeding 1 GW. POSITION SUMMARY:
Heelstone Renewable Energy is offering a paid summer internship in the Development department supporting our Interconnection team. This position is located in Durham, North Carolina.
We will teach you the fundamentals of grid interconnection and expose you to core aspects of renewable energy project development, including siting considerations, utility coordination, and power flow. At the end of the internship, you will be empowered with the knowledge and skills that are highly desired by clean energy-focused businesses.
Ideal candidates are technically minded individuals with a passion for energy and climate issues. Candidates should also have a willingness to dive deep into technical studies and utility requirements.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Land identification and evaluation with a focus on grid infrastructure to support analysis of grid interconnection capacity
• Assist in preparing interconnection applications and maintaining project tracking systems
• Help review technical documentation from various consultants and vendors
• Support the review of power flow studies and interconnection reports
• Assist in maintaining interconnection schedules and milestone tracking
• Participate in utility coordination meetings and internal project reviews
• Assist in review of utility policies and requirements, including tariff and business practice documentation
SKILLS AND PERSONAL QUALITIES
• High level of initiative and curiosity about power systems
• Strong technical aptitude and analytical skills
• Strong communication skills - written and verbal
• Experience with Microsoft Excel and data analysis
• Highly organized with attention to detail
• Background knowledge of renewable energy technologies
• Basic understanding of electrical systems
• Familiarity with GIS and/or Python considered a plus
• Coursework in power systems engineering considered a plus
• Familiarity with engineering software tools (PSSE, TARA, etc.) considered a plus
EDUCATION/OTHER REQUIREMENTS
• Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at an accredited university
• Pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical field
• Completed at least 2 years of study
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
