Position Purpose

Performs minor HVAC service and repairs on a variety of systems and equipment under direct supervision.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Preventive Maintenance
  • Inspects, repairs, modifies and installs HVAC equipment including refrigeration and air conditioning compressors, receivers, condensers, chillers, water cooling towers, forced air converter units, pumps, automatic and hand valves, expansion valves and capillary tubes.
  • Conducts regular preventive maintenance inspections of refrigeration units, isolated heating and ventilating units, including boilers, gas and electrically operated air-conditioning equipment, and makes necessary adjustments or repairs; services and repairs evaporative coolers.
  • Repairs or replaces defective parts in units and equipment and their controls, including thermostats, automatic switches, fan controls, log switches, damper motors, louvers, relays, filters, controls, belts, compressors, heat exchangers, high limit controls, pressure controls, safety valves, and automatic gas valves.
  • Operates a variety of hand and power tools, welder torch, vacuum pump, test equipment utilized in the trade, and a motor vehicle; maintains equipment in effective and safe working condition; maintains parts and tool inventory.
  • Performs skilled electrical maintenance work in the repair, installation and alteration of HVAC equipment, components, timers, motors and wiring systems as needed; connect motors to control panels.
  • Maintains related records concerning time, labor and materials; maintains log of tasks performed and writes reports as required.
  • Responds to emergency calls as needed, while under direct supervision, including after-hours and/or weekends.

Safety
  • Performs preventive maintenance on tools and equipment and ensures equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing; operates tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and promptly reports any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.

  • Knowledge of methods and materials used in minor maintenance of equipment.
  • Ability to recognize maintenance needs and initiate appropriate action.
  • Ability to use and care for operations equipment.
  • Ability to make minor repairs to facility equipment.
  • Ability to use software to create spreadsheets, databases, and do word processing.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written forms.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Travel Requirements
  • Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Physical & Mental Demands, Work Hazards
  • Tools/Equipment Used: Electrical measuring and testing equipment; welding equipment; hand tools; power tools; hoist; light truck or van.
  • Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting; frequently works in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
  • Motion: Frequent walking, climbing stairs/ladders/scaffolding, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; frequent driving.
  • Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) on a daily basis.
  • Environment: Works outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; may work on rooftops; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; works around machinery with moving parts; may work in tight or enclosed spaces; may work irregular and prolonged hours; frequent districtwide travel.
  • Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.
  • Mental Demands: Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions.

Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Education:
    • Accredited High School diploma, GED, or Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency required;
    • Specialized training from a Fort Worth ISD Career and Technical Education (CTE) program, accredited college, technical, or trade school preferred.
  • Certification/License:
    • None.
  • Experience:
    • 1 year of general trade, maintenance, construction, mechanical, or installation experience;

  • Successful completion of an approved Fort Worth ISD Career and Technical Education (CTE) program, including, but not limited to:
    • Automotive Collision Repair
    • Automotive Technology
    • Aviation Maintenance
    • Construction Technology
    • Electrical Technology
    • Robotics and Automation
    • Welding
  • Additional Requirements:
    • Employees must provide necessary personal tools to perform assigned duties. FWISD is prohibited from replacing stolen or broken personal property.
